Job Description

This role is a hands-on machine operating position within a manufacturing environment, focused on supporting the fabrication department by ensuring the internal manufacturing team receives accurately formed sheet metal components. You will operate a variety of metal forming machines, follow blueprints, and use precision measuring tools to produce high-quality parts to specification.

Responsibilities

  • Operate various machines in the fabrication department, including presses, shears, notchers, and punch presses, to form sheet metal into finished components.
  • Set up machines by reading and interpreting prints, adjusting start and stop positions, and configuring equipment to meet job specifications.
  • Cut and form metal sheets to exact specifications, ensuring accuracy and consistency throughout the production process.
  • Measure materials and finished parts accurately using a tape measure and other precision measuring tools.
  • Use quality instruments such as micrometers and calipers to verify that fabricated sheet metal meets required standards and tolerances.
  • Handle and move materials safely, consistently lifting 25–50 pounds as part of daily tasks.
  • Use hand tools to assist with fabrication, adjustments, and minor maintenance of equipment as needed.
  • Follow established safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work area within the manufacturing facility.
  • Collaborate with the internal manufacturing team to ensure they receive the correct parts and supplies in a timely manner.

Essential Skills

  • Experience operating presses or shears in a fabrication or manufacturing environment.
  • Previous experience working with sheet metal and sheet metal fabrication processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and prints for fabrication work.
  • Proficiency using a tape measure accurately for layout and verification.
  • Ability to lift 25–50 pounds consistently throughout the shift.
  • Ability to use hand tools safely and effectively in a fabrication setting.
  • Familiarity with operating fabrication equipment such as notchers and punch presses.
  • Ability to use quality instruments, including micrometers and calipers, to verify part accuracy.
  • Ownership of steel toe footwear suitable for a manufacturing environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience as a fabricator or press operator in a manufacturing or fabrication shop.
  • Experience working with quality standards and inspection tools in a production environment.
  • Comfort working with a variety of sheet metal thicknesses and configurations.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality parts.

Work Environment

This position is based in a manufacturing facility within the fabrication department. The role follows a 1st shift schedule, working Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You will work around metal forming equipment such as presses, shears, notchers, and punch presses, and regularly handle sheet metal materials. The environment is industrial and production-focused, requiring adherence to safety procedures and proper use of personal protective equipment. Steel toe boots are required as part of the dress code, along with other standard safety gear as needed for a fabrication setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of South Bend, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $19.00/hr.
