The Medical Assistant / Medication Technician works directly with adolescents in a residential treatment setting, providing daily support, health education, medication management, and crisis-responsive care. This position conducts on-the-floor observation, ensures resident safety, participates in programming and education blocks, and provides 30-minute daily health-related groups. Under the supervision of an RN, the MA/Med Tech supports intake processes, monitors resident well-being, handles minor medical needs, and ensures all medications are properly managed, documented, and available.

Key Responsibilities

Resident Care & Safety

  • Provide constant on-the-floor observation to ensure resident safety and support emotional regulation.
  • Assist with programming, school blocks, groups, and daily routines.
  • Utilize verbal de-escalation, conflict resolution, and trauma-responsive skills during escalated behaviors or crises.
  • Work collaboratively with Behavioral Health Intervention Specialists, MHTs, and House Leads to maintain a safe therapeutic environment.

Medication Management

  • Observe and document self-administration of medication in accordance with NRS/NAC and facility policies.
  • Maintain accurate Medication Administration Records (MARs) and daily documentation.
  • Monitor medication supplies to ensure each resident has a minimum 10-day supply at all times.
  • Call in prescription orders from psychiatric providers and coordinate with pharmacies for pick-up or delivery.
  • Ensure all medication logs, counts, and storage protocols meet regulatory and facility standards.

Medical Tasks

  • Take and record daily vital signs for all residents.
  • Manage minor medical concerns, first aid, and basic triage.
  • Provide medical updates to nursing and clinical teams as needed.
  • Complete intake assessments under the supervision of the RN, including vitals, documentation, and initial health screening.
  • Oversee and document self-administration of medications in accordance with facility policies and state regulations.
  • Maintain accurate medication logs, MARS, and inventory control.
  • Communicate closely with the RN and nursing department regarding medication changes, side effects, or medical concerns.
  • Report any medication errors, refusals, or unusual reactions immediately to the nurse on duty or RN.

Programming & Education

  • Facilitate daily 30-minute health and mental-health-related groups, such as:
  • Sleep hygiene
  • Stress management
  • Basic nutrition
  • Understanding medications
  • Hygiene and self-care

Administrative & Compliance Duties

  • Complete all required documentation accurately and promptly within the Electronic Health Record System.
  • Participate in staff meetings, debriefings, and ongoing training.
  • Follow all CARF, HCQC, NAC 449 and internal SAI policy standards for care, safety, and documentation.
  • Uphold confidentiality and maintain professional boundaries at all times.

Qualifications

  • Certified Medical Assistant and Medication Technician certification required
  • Previous experience in psychiatric, behavioral health, or residential settings strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience working with adolescents required
  • Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in high stress or crisis situations.
  • Knowledge of medication safety protocols and basic medical terminology.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and observation skills.
  • Must be able to pass background check and drug screening.
