Drywaller - Texture/Taping

The Drywall Texture & Taping Journeyman is responsible for finishing gypsum wallboard systems on commercial construction projects. This position applies tape, joint compound, textures, and finishing materials to drywall surfaces to achieve the specified finish level and prepare surfaces for painting, wall coverings, and final occupancy.

The Journeyman is expected to work independently, maintain production standards, demonstrate craftsmanship, and assist in training less experienced employees when required.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are those tasks, duties, and responsibilities that comprise the means of accomplishing the position's purpose and objectives.

Drywall Finishing

• Apply tape and joint compound to drywall joints, corners, fasteners, and accessories.
• Operate automatic taping and finishing tools efficiently and safely.
• Mix and prepare joint compounds and texture materials.
• Apply finish coats to achieve specified wall finish levels.
• Sand, scrape, and prepare surfaces between applications.
• Repair damaged drywall and patch defective areas.
• Apply a variety of textures using hand and mechanical application equipment.
• Produce high-quality finished surfaces suitable for paint and decorative finishes.
• Verify finished work meets Sands Wall Systems quality standards and project specifications.
• Identify and report installation deficiencies that affect finishing quality.

Project Responsibilities

• Read and understand construction drawings, project specifications, finish schedules, and work directives.
• Coordinate work with foremen, superintendents, project managers, other trades, and general contractors.
• Complete assigned work within project schedules.
• Maintain productive workflow while minimizing material waste.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Equipment Operations

• Safely operate:
• • Automatic taping tools
  • Texture sprayers
  • Mixing equipment
  • Scissor lifts
  • Baker scaffolds
  • Ladders
  • Power sanders
  • Other finishing-related equipment
• Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of tools and equipment.
• Report damaged or unsafe equipment immediately.

Safety

• Follow all OSHA requirements.
• Follow all Company safety policies and procedures.
• Follow all customer, owner, and general contractor jobsite rules.
• Properly wear required PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, high-visibility apparel, fall protection, respirators, and hearing protection when required.
• Immediately report safety concerns, incidents, near misses, and injuries.

Other Duties

• Assist other crews when necessary.
• Mentor Apprentice Finishers and entry-level employees.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education & Training Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• OSHA 10 Certification preferred.
• Scissor Lift Certification preferred.
• Fall Protection Training preferred.
• Additional Company-provided safety training as assigned.

Work Experience Requirements

• Minimum 4 years commercial drywall finishing experience preferred.
• Demonstrated experience using automatic taping and finishing tools.
• Experience applying hand and spray textures.
• Experience working on commercial construction projects.
• Experience working from lifts, scaffolding, and stilts.
