Job Description
Kell Mechanical is a fast-growing commercial HVAC contractor looking for experienced Commercial HVAC Service Technicians to join our team. We are looking for technicians who know how to diagnose and solve problems—not simply replace parts.
This is a commercial HVAC position. Our technicians work on a wide variety of commercial HVAC equipment, controls, and mechanical systems throughout the Bay Area. We are interested in experienced technicians at multiple skill levels, including highly experienced Senior and Lead Service Technicians with strong diagnostic, controls, VRF, and large commercial equipment experience.
Responsibilities Include:
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain commercial HVAC equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled service.
- Troubleshoot complex electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, airflow, and controls issues.
- Diagnose equipment failures and determine the root cause of the problem.
- Troubleshoot 208V, 230V, and 460V commercial HVAC equipment.
- Read and understand electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and control diagrams.
- Troubleshoot compressors, motors, contactors, relays, transformers, sensors, safeties, and other HVAC components.
- Check refrigerant pressures, temperatures, superheat, subcooling, and system performance.
- Locate and repair refrigerant leaks.
- Troubleshoot economizers, dampers, actuators, VFDs, and ventilation systems.
- Diagnose airflow and static-pressure issues.
- Troubleshoot thermostats, sensors, VAV boxes, and commercial control systems.

- Identify equipment deficiencies and recommend appropriate repairs or replacement.
- Clearly explain equipment conditions and repair recommendations to customers.

- Coordinate with our service manager, project managers, engineers, vendors, and customers.
- Obtain parts, equipment, and material required to complete repairs.
- Maintain an organized company service vehicle and inventory.
- Follow company safety policies and industry best practices.
- Participate in an on-call rotation when required.

- Organized and able to manage their daily workload
- Customer-service oriented
- Good communicators
- Accountable for the quality of their work
- Interested in continuing to grow technically and professionally
We value technicians who want to understand why a system failed, not just identify the component that failed. A successful Kell Mechanical service technician should be able to walk onto a job, evaluate the entire system, diagnose the problem, develop a solution, communicate that solution clearly, and leave the customer confident that the job was handled correctly.

- Experience troubleshooting commercial controls, VFDs, VRF/VRV systems, and large commercial HVAC equipment.
- Experience with equipment startup and commissioning.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple service calls.
- Strong customer communication skills with a professional appearance and attitude.

- Controls and building automation
- VRF/VRV systems
- Advanced electrical troubleshooting
- Complex refrigeration problems
- System commissioning
- Mentoring and assisting less-experienced technicians
- Working directly with customers, engineers, vendors, and project managers

Compensation & Benefits: Pay: $45.00–$65.00+ per hour, depending on experience, qualifications, and technical ability. (Highly experienced Senior or Lead Technicians with advanced controls, VRF, large-equipment, and diagnostic experience may qualify for compensation above the posted range.)
In addition to competitive hourly compensation, Kell Mechanical offers:
- Overtime opportunities
- Performance-based commissions and bonuses
