We are looking for an experienced Controller to lead accounting oversight for a real estate portfolio in Southfield, Michigan. This role is responsible for maintaining timely and accurate financial reporting across commercial and multifamily properties while helping the accounting team uphold strong standards during the close process. The ideal candidate brings sound technical accounting knowledge, a collaborative leadership style, and the ability to strengthen controls, resolve issues, and support consistent financial operations.

Responsibilities:
• Lead the month-end close across the property portfolio, ensuring deadlines are met and reporting outputs are complete and reliable.
• Evaluate and approve financial statements for commercial and multifamily assets, confirming accuracy before distribution.
• Review account reconciliations, accrual entries, and supporting schedules to improve consistency, quality, and compliance with reporting standards.
• Coach and support accounting staff in resolving close-related issues, clarifying expectations, and maintaining accountability for deliverables.
• Oversee common area maintenance and tenant-related reconciliations, ensuring calculations align with lease requirements and supporting documentation is audit-ready.
• Partner with property accountants and operations teams to address tenant billing questions, resolve discrepancies, and explain complex accounting structures such as expense pools, gross-ups, and caps.
• Monitor multifamily accounting activity, including rent support, concessions, revenue recognition, vacancy-related analysis, and security deposit reconciliations.
• Help implement and reinforce accounting policies, internal controls, proper workflow design, and segregation of duties across the department.• 5+ years of accounting or controllership experience, preferably supporting real estate portfolios with commercial and multifamily assets.
• Strong knowledge of financial reporting, month-end close procedures, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules.
• Experience reviewing tenant-related reconciliations and applying lease terms to accounting and billing processes.
• Understanding of multifamily accounting concepts, including rent activity, concessions, revenue recognition, vacancy analysis, and security deposits.
• Ability to interpret accounting policies, strengthen internal controls, and promote consistent process execution across a team.
• Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to guide staff, solve problems, and keep multiple deadlines on track.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate, well-supported financial information for review or audit.
