A Computed Tomography (CT) technologist operates specialized X-ray and computer equipment to create detailed cross-sectional and 3D images of internal body structures. Their core responsibilities center on patient preparation, machine operation, and safety management.
Patient Care and Preparation
- Review instructions: Read and follow exact doctor and radiologist orders for what body part to scan.
- Check history: Collect medical histories and check for allergies, especially to contrast dyes.
- Explain and position: Talk patients through the steps and position them correctly on the table so the machine captures the right spot.
- Administer contrast: Give oral or intravenous contrast materials (dyes) when needed to highlight blood vessels or soft tissues.
Equipment Operation and Safety
- Calibrate scanners: Prepare, test, and adjust the CT equipment to make sure it works right.
- Control radiation: Follow strict safety rules to keep radiation exposure as low as possible for patients and staff.
- Capture images: Run the scan from a control room, watching the computer to make sure the digital slices and 3D models are clear.
- Process results: Check image quality before sending the final files to a radiologist for diagnosis.
