Shipping and Inventory Manager
Job Description
Steel Fabrication Shop | Full-Time | Working Manager Position - We are a busy steel fabrication shop seeking a hands-on Shipping & Inventory Manager who thrives in a fast-paced industrial environment. This is a working manager role — not a desk job. You will spend significant time on the shop floor receiving materials, preparing and loading shipments, managing inventory and your team, and coordinating freight while maintaining accurate documentation and clear communication across teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all inbound and outbound shipments of steel products, ensuring accuracy, quality, and on-time delivery
- Prepare and maintain complete shipping documentation (bills of lading, packing lists, certificates of compliance, material test reports, etc.)
- Coordinate freight with carriers, negotiate rates when needed, schedule pickups/deliveries, and track shipments
- Manage inventory of hardware, fabricated components, and finished goods — including cycle counts, physical inventories, and accurate system updates
- Receive, inspect, and put away incoming materials; resolve discrepancies promptly
- Load and unload trucks (forklift experience preferred) and ensure safe, efficient material handling
- Work closely with production, project management, vendors, and customers to meet shipping deadlines and resolve issues
- Maintain a clean, organized shipping and storage area that meets safety and housekeeping standards
- Train and oversee shipping/warehouse personnel as needed
Requirements
- Proven experience in shipping, receiving, and inventory control — preferably in a manufacturing, fabrication, or heavy industrial setting
- Strong computer skills (inventory/ERP systems, Microsoft Office/Excel, email)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills — you will interact daily with truck drivers, vendors, customers, and internal teams
- Willingness and ability to work hands-on in a production environment (standing, lifting, operating forklifts, working outdoors in all weather as needed)
- Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accurate documentation and inventory accuracy
- Reliable, self-motivated, and able to prioritize multiple deadlines under pressure
- Valid driver’s license; forklift certification a plus
Ideal Candidate
Someone who is not afraid to get their hands dirty, takes ownership of the shipping and inventory department, and can keep both paperwork and material flowing smoothly. If you prefer a pure office role or dislike physical work, this position is not the right fit. We offer competitive pay based on experience, a benefits package, and the opportunity to play a key role in a growing steel fabrication operation.
