POSITION: AFTER-SCHOOL TEACHER’S ASSISTANT

REPORTS TO: LEAD TEACHER & AFTER-SCHOOL SITE DIRECTOR

LOCATION: Englewood, NJ

DEPARTMENT: AS Grieco (180.1), AS Quarles (180.3), AS McCloud (180.5)

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The After-School Teacher's Assistant supports the delivery of a safe, nurturing, and engaging after-school program for children. This position assists with daily activities, homework support, structured play, snacks, transitions, and classroom routines while helping maintain a positive and inclusive environment. The Teacher's Assistant works collaboratively with the Site Director and program staff to support children's social, emotional, and educational development.


The Teacher's Assistant helps create a safe and supportive environment where children can learn, play, build relationships, and develop confidence after the school day. Through consistent supervision, positive interactions, and hands-on support, this role contributes to a high-quality after-school experience for children and families.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Operations / Service Delivery

  • Supervise and actively engage children during after-school programming.
  • Assist with age-appropriate educational, enrichment, recreational, and structured play activities.
  • Support children with homework and other school-related activities as directed.
  • Assist with snack distribution, transitions, and daily program routines.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming program environment.
  • Follow established schedules, lesson plans, routines, and program guidelines.
  • Encourage positive behavior and support children's social-emotional development.
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all children.

Leadership & Supervision

  • Maintain appropriate supervision of children at all times and follow required staff-to-child ratios.
  • Support the Lead Teacher and Site Director in implementing daily program activities and routines.
  • Assist with behavior management and conflict resolution using positive, age-appropriate strategies.
  • Follow all staff direction and established program procedures.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development as assigned.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Follow all applicable New Jersey licensing requirements, Bergen Family Center policies, and program procedures.
  • Complete required documentation and communicate concerns regarding children's safety, behavior, or well-being to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, staff, and agency information.
  • Follow all health, safety, emergency, and child supervision procedures.

Family/Client Engagement

  • Interact with children, parents, guardians, and caregivers in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Communicate relevant information regarding children's participation or needs to the appropriate supervisor or staff member.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with children and families.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work cooperatively with Teachers, Site Directors, and other program staff.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Demonstrate dependability, patience, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.
  • Support Bergen Family Center's mission, values, policies, and commitment to strengthening families and communities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Current enrollment in high school or a post-secondary program may be considered based on applicable licensing requirements.

Experience

  • Previous experience working with children preferred.
  • Experience in childcare, education, recreation, or after-school programming is a plus.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Must meet applicable New Jersey School-Age Child Care (SACC) licensing requirements.
  • Must successfully complete all required background checks and clearances.
  • Additional certifications or training may be required based on program and licensing requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work is primarily performed in a school, classroom, recreation, and/or community-based after-school environment.
  • Regular standing, walking, bending, reaching, and moving throughout the program space.
  • May participate in indoor and outdoor activities and recreational programming.
  • Ability to actively supervise children and respond appropriately to safety or emergency situations.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, as required by program needs.
  • Work may involve exposure to typical classroom, playground, and outdoor environmental conditions.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Employment Status: Part-Time
  • Hours per Week: 17.5 hours
  • Typically scheduled Monday through Friday during weekday afternoon after-school program hours.
  • Schedule and hours may vary based on program needs, school schedules, enrollment, and site requirements.
  • Occasional additional hours may be required for staff meetings, professional development, special events, or program activities.

COMPENSATION

  • Hourly Rate: $18
  • Compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Eligible for professional development opportunities and required organizational training.
