Overview
Stonemasons work with hard and soft stone to create or restore structures including walls, facades, benchtops, monuments, and architectural features. They interpret plans, measure and mark stone, operate cutting machinery, and ensure precise installation. Stonemasonry remains a specialized trade combining traditional craftsmanship with modern machinery across construction, manufacturing, and heritage sectors.
- Cut, shape, split, and finish stone using chisels, hammers, grinders, and diamond saws.
- Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Install stone elements such as walls, arches, pillars, countertops, facades, and decorative features
- Repair and restore stonework, including heritage buildings and monuments.
- Mix and apply mortar and binding materials.
- Set out and carve letters or designs for monumental masonry.
- Maintain tools and operate lifting equipment safely.
- Split time between workshop fabrication and on‐site installation.
- Exposure to dust, noise, weather, and physical labor.
- May work at heights using scaffolding and must follow strict safety protocols.
- Diamond saws, polishers, planning machines, chisels, punches, hammers.
- Commercial facades and architectural stonework.
