Controls Engineer
Job Description
1. Objective
Provide temporary onsite controls systems support to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant operation of refinery DCS, SIS, and PLC systems, with primary focus on Siemens S7 PLC platforms and H2 unit.
2. Scope of Services
Provide day-to-day operational support, troubleshooting, lifecycle activities, and minor project execution across control systems, including:
Controls Systems Support
- Maintain and support DCS systems, including:
- System health, history modules, and database integrity
- Server patching, reboots, and system load management
- Graphics, alarms (non-logic), point configuration, and backups
- Support PLC systems (primary Siemens S7; secondary Allen-Bradley), including:
- Logic troubleshooting, updates, and basic configuration changes
- Support SIS systems, including:
- Annual testing coordination
- Lifecycle support and inventory management
- FAT participation and basic logic validation
Instrumentation & Integration Support
- Support routine instrument maintenance and troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot and support 3rd party devices (e.g., Woodward, Trisen)
- Maintain and troubleshoot data transfer logic and non-control integrations
Network & Infrastructure
- Maintain control system network integrity, including:
- IP address governance for DCS/SIS/PLC systems
- Server and application node support (including reboots)
- Thin client and wireless I/O support
Reporting, Monitoring & Compliance
- Generate and maintain:
- Alarm metrics and PARR reports
- Configure and support system alerts (e.g., BLAN)
- Execute work in alignment with Management of Change (MOC) requirements, including alarm limit changes
Lifecycle & Project Support
- Support control system lifecycle activities, including upgrades, obsolescence management, and reliability improvements
- Execute minor control system changes, including:
- Basic control implementations (e.g., pumps, MOVs)
- Functional testing and validation
On-Call Support
- Provide on-call support as required to ensure system reliability and rapid response to operational issues
3. Work Location & Schedule
- Contractor shall be onsite at the Salt Lake Refinery on a standard work schedule
- Remote work may be incorporated after the initial onsite period, as agreed by COMPANY
- Fly-in/fly-out arrangements are not acceptable
4. Duration
- Estimated duration: ~10 months onsite (September 2026 through June 2027)
- Potential extension or transition to remote support based on business need
5. Contractor Qualifications
- Required:
- Experience with Siemens S7 PLC systems
- Experience supporting refinery or industrial DCS/SIS/PLC environments
- Preferred:
- Experience with Allen-Bradley PLC systems
- Familiarity with process safety and MOC processes
6. Deliverables & Expectations
- Execution of assigned system support, troubleshooting, and change activities
- Timely completion of control system updates and issue resolution
- Routine reporting (alarm metrics, system status, etc.)
- Documentation of all changes in accordance with COMPANY procedures
- Coordination with COMPANY personnel to prioritize and execute work
7. General Requirements
- CONTRACTOR shall comply with all COMPANY safety, environmental, and operational standards
- Scope includes all work necessary to maintain safe and reliable system operation, even if not explicitly stated
- CONTRACTOR shall coordinate closely with COMPANY representatives for planning and execution
