We are seeking a dependable Equipment Operator to support city-wide maintenance and operational needs. This entry-level role involves operating light equipment, performing routine maintenance, and completing manual labor tasks that help maintain public infrastructure, rights-of-way, and City properties.
This position is safety-sensitive and plays a key role in keeping Fairhope’s public spaces safe, functional, and well maintained.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Operation
- Operate light equipment such as tractors, mowers, and light dump trucks.
- Use small engine and power tools including lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, concrete saws, blowers, and vacuums.
- Drive City vehicles to and from job sites.
- Load and unload equipment, tools, and materials.
Grounds, Roads & Right-of-Way Maintenance
- Maintain assigned areas and rights-of-way through mowing, trimming, edging, and debris removal.
- Assist with road, drainage, and ditch maintenance.
- Clear fallen trees, limbs, and debris following storms or emergency situations.
- Perform flagman duties during road or maintenance operations as needed.
Equipment Maintenance
- Conduct pre-work safety inspections on assigned equipment and vehicles.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance, including fueling and cleaning equipment.
- Monitor equipment condition and report repair needs.
- Assist with minor mechanical repairs when required.
Manual Labor & City Support
- Perform general labor tasks such as shoveling asphalt, dirt, rocks, and other materials.
- Assist with concrete work including forming and repairing curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
- Ensure proper signage and safety controls are in place for work zones.
- Assist with City special events and emergency response efforts as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- One (1) year of experience operating light equipment in landscaping, construction, or public works or a combination of education, training, and experience.
- Valid driver’s license required; ability to obtain a Class B CDL within six (6) months of hire.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and move materials over 50 lbs and perform physically demanding work.
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and emergencies as needed.
- Strong attention to safety and ability to follow instructions under close supervision.
- Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
