Assistant Controller
Job Description
Assistant Controller – Mining & Processing
An established mining and mineral processing operation is looking to hire an Assistant Controller to join its finance team.
This is a hands-on accounting leadership role for someone who enjoys working close to operations rather than sitting purely within corporate finance. You’ll partner with operational, maintenance, and technical teams while supporting the Controller across financial reporting, cost accounting, controls, project accounting, and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll play a key role in the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting while helping the business better understand operational performance.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting monthly and annual financial close
- Preparing and reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- Supporting financial statements and management reporting
- Ensuring compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies
- Managing key elements of cost and inventory accounting
- Supporting inventory valuation across ore, work-in-process, and finished goods
- Performing standard costing and variance analysis
- Tracking production costs across mineral processing operations
- Partnering with operations and maintenance teams to identify cost improvement opportunities
- Supporting AP/AR, accruals, fixed assets, and depreciation
- Tracking CAPEX and project spend against budget
- Strengthening internal controls, policies, and accounting procedures
- Supporting internal and external audits
- Helping improve ERP, accounting, and reporting processes
- Providing guidance and functional oversight to accounting staff
- Acting as a backup to the Controller when required
The position has particularly strong exposure to cost accounting, including inventory valuation, variance analysis and production-cost tracking across crushing, milling, flotation, leach and SX/EW processes.
What We’re Looking For
You should bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
- Experience with cost and inventory accounting
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills
- Experience working with accounting/ERP systems
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
These are the core required qualifications identified for the position.
Highly Desirable
We’d be particularly interested in candidates with:
- CPA qualification or progress toward CPA
- Mining, manufacturing, mineral processing, or other heavy-industry experience
- Standard costing and variance analysis experience
- Fixed asset and capital project accounting experience
- Experience with ERP platforms such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or similar
- Internal controls and audit experience
Working Environment
This is a full-time position within an active industrial/mining environment. While the role is primarily office-based, you’ll interact regularly with the operational facility and the teams responsible for running it.
The successful candidate will initially be expected to work in the office three days per week for the first 90 days, after which other hybrid arrangements may be discussed. Additional hours can occasionally be required around month-end close, audits, and budgeting cycles.
Why Consider It?
This would suit an accountant who wants more than a traditional financial reporting position. You’ll have visibility across finance, operations, production costs, CAPEX, controls, and business performance, with the opportunity to work closely with senior finance leadership and operational stakeholders.
