CSS, Inc. is looking for a qualified candidate to support the Fisheries Statistics Division (FSD) of NOAA's Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC). This individual will provide biological sampling, data management, and analytical support for the Trip Interview Program (TIP).ResponsibilitiesParticipate in field operations and assist in the collection of lengths, weights, and biological samples (e.g., otoliths) from commercial fisheries catchesPrepare written trip reports for each sampling activity/tripQuery TIP and associated data to identify inconsistencies; monitor incoming data for standardizationPrepare QA/QC reports using the QA/QC reporting system in the TIPS web portal; update and improve the SAS code that that underlies the QA/QC reporting tool as necessaryPerform data extractions and create data reports in support of various analytical work by SEFSC scientistAssist in research, development, implementation, and enhancement of electronic data collection systems used in the TIP programDevelop training materials, technical manuals, and curricula to advance the use of electronic systems in dockside samplingParticipate in outreach events such as Open Houses, Youth/Career Fairs, etc. in order to explain the program goals and methods to the publicAttend training sessions or conferences to acquire updates to sampling protocols and technology.Required QualificationsMS Degree in Marine Science or a related field; OR BS Degree plus 3 years of relevant experience.Ability to apply basic concepts, principles and methodologies to independently perform scientific tasks using standard methods and techniquesProficient with database and statistical software including Excel, Access, SQL Developer and SAS.Proficient in the use of fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification books and keysExcellent written and oral communication skills. Documented ability to prepare written scientific reports and deliver oral presentations.Initial physical exam and/or periodic medical monitoring, including drug screening, may be required for sea-going roles. Ability to lift/carry at least 40lbs and work outdoors for extended periods.Ability to pass a National Agency Check (NACI) and maintain it throughout the duration of employment.Preferred QualificationsExperience collecting catch and effort information from commercial fishermenKnowledge of collection of routine biological samples (lengths, age structures, gonads, etc.) from marine fishSkilled in using Android mobile device applications for field collections of environmental dataThe role is contingent upon CSS winning the contract, please note it can take several months before we know whether this role will be filled.At CSS, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and merit-based workplace.
