POSITION SUMMARYPharmacy technicians assist and support licensed pharmacists in providing health care and medications to patients. Pharmacy technicians must have a broad knowledge of pharmacy practice, and be skilled in the techniques required to order, stock, package, and compound and otherwise prepare medications.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESProcures and distributes medication orders per physician request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocolsFills physician orders, medication surgical kits, medication carts, stock requisitions and automated dispensing system refill lists accuratelyReplenishes medications in emergency drug containers and floor stock areas accurately Prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile preparations safely and accurately using appropriate techniques including aseptic manipulations, garbing procedures, and aseptic work practicesDelivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately per established scheduleAssist with the purchase of drugs and supplies in accordance with GPO bids and Glenwood best demonstrated practicesAssists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing medications and supplies in appropriate locations Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration dateCompletes and documents all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly; identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugsRestocks medication and IV dispensing areas accurately within specified time periodsRepackages bulk medications in unit-dose packages safely and accurately per established procedures using appropriate techniquesPicks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery roundsAssist in the process for patient and department charges, and that they are accurately and timely posted to accountsGenerates reports, pick lists, and labels as requiredAnswers the telephone, identifying self and department; directs calls to appropriate personnelMay answers requests at the window (if applicable to hospital location) and makes stat deliveries to patient care and ancillary areas when requestedMaintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately, files documentation in appropriate locationsDemonstrates competence in automated dispensing equipment and adheres to established processes and proceduresLoads medications from restock lists into automated distribution system correctlyEmpties and reconciles contents of automated distribution equipment return binsEnsures that look-alike, sound-alike medications are segregated in automated distribution equipmentMaintains outdated medication tracking function, ensuring appropriate expiration dates are entered, stock is rotated, and expired items removed from automated distribution equipmentMaintains appropriate par levels for inventories in automated distribution equipmentAccurately loads new inventory items and removes items deleted from inventory in automated distribution equipmentMonitors automated distribution equipment stock-outs and resolves stock-outs in a timely mannerInspects medications in automated distribution equipment monthly, ensuring removal of expired and unusable medications and reconciliation of inventoriesMaintains security and confidentiality of passwordsAttends and participates in departmental meetings, in-services, and quality improvement programsMaintains all required training and education per department requirements Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire, and infection control. Complies with all applicable state, local and federal regulationsEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEPharmacy Technician:Education: High school degree or equivalentExperience: Previous experience in a hospital or retail pharmacy preferredCertification/Licensure: Pharmacy Technician Candidate or Pharmacy Intern Other: Pharmacy Technician 0 - 1 years experiencePharmacy Technician II:Education: High school degree or equivalentExperience: Previous experience as a hospital or retail pharmacy technician preferred; Certification/Licensure: Louisiana Certified Pharmacy Technician; National Certification as a Pharmacy Technician preferred Other: Pharmacy Technician II, 1 - 3 years experiencePharmacy Technician IIIEducation: High school degree or equivalentExperience: Previous experience as a hospital pharmacy technician or equivalent requiredCertification/Licensure: Nationally certified as a certified Pharmacy Technician; ACPE or ASHP accredit course in compounding sterile preparations and IV certification preferred.Other: Pharmacy Technician III, 4 or more years' experience (generally with supervisory responsibilities)High school degree or equivalentPrevious experience as a hospital pharmacy technician preferred; ACPE or ASHP accredit course in compounding sterile preparations preferred.Pharmacy Tech certification required.Please indicate whether you have ever been convicted of a crime, including any misdemeanors and/or DUI/DWI.
