Tank Set Lead (Propane Systems Technician)

Department: Service & Installation
Reports To: Service Manager
Job Type: Full-Time


Position Overview

The Tank Set Lead is a critical member of the propane service and installation team, responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient installation, maintenance, and repair of propane systems. This role requires a highly skilled, safety-conscious professional who leads by example, mentors apprentices, and ensures that all work meets regulatory and company standards.


Key Responsibilities

Primary Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Installation, Maintenance & Repair
    • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair propane tanks, regulators, gas lines, and related propane systems.
    • Ensure all work complies with applicable codes, safety regulations, and company procedures.
    • Conduct system pressure checks and leak tests to verify proper installation and operation.
  2. Inventory, Equipment & Quality Control
    • Assist with fuel, equipment, tools, and asset inventory management.
    • Maintain accurate quality control documentation and ensure proper use and care of all company equipment.
  3. Customer Service
    • Provide professional, courteous, and knowledgeable service to all customers.
    • Educate customers on system operation and safety practices.
  4. Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance
    • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned service vehicle(s).
    • Review and maintain service records, report maintenance issues promptly, and ensure the safe, clean, and organized condition of the vehicle and tools.
  5. Tank & Cylinder Preparation
    • Prepare tanks and cylinders for inspection, refurbishing, maintenance, and certification/recertification.
    • Safely handle and move tanks using appropriate lifting and securing procedures.
  6. Leadership & Training
    • Oversee, lead, train, and develop tank set apprentices and support staff.
    • Model proper safety and installation techniques and promote a culture of teamwork and accountability.
  7. Administrative & Billing Accuracy
    • Accurately record time, parts, and materials to ensure correct billing to customers.
    • Utilize a company tablet or comparable device to document trip reports, system diagnostics, and inventory usage.
  8. Facility and Yard Support
    • Assist with loading and unloading trucks as needed.
    • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace and company facility.
  9. Professional Conduct
    • Work diligently, professionally, and courteously at all times, acting in the best interests of the company and customers.
    • Support company values and safety culture through consistent adherence to policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of propane installation or service experience preferred.
  • Valid CDL with HazMat and Tanker endorsements preferred (or willingness to obtain).
  • CETP Certification or equivalent technical training strongly desired.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hand and power tools.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and work in outdoor environments year-round.
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency with tablets or digital service reporting tools.
