A pipe fitter assembles, installs, and maintains high-pressure and low-pressure piping systems. They read blueprints, measure and cut materials, and join sections using methods like welding, threading, and brazing. They are vital in heavy industries, ensuring systems effectively transport liquids, chemicals, and gases
Key Responsibilities
- Blueprint Analysis: Read and interpret complex engineering schematics, isometric drawings, and blueprints to map out piping routes.
- Fabrication: Measure, mark, cut, thread, and bend pipes to exact specifications using hand tools and heavy machinery.
- System Assembly: Join pipe sections and attach valves, hangers, and flow control devices using welding, brazing, soldering, or mechanical joints.
- Testing & Troubleshooting: Conduct pressure and leak tests using hydrostatic gauges to ensure system integrity and compliance with strict safety codes.
- Repair & Maintenance: Inspect, diagnose, and replace defective parts or broken pipe sections within aging systems.
Essential Requirements
- Education & Training: High school diploma or equivalent, coupled with the completion of a formal trade school program or an apprenticeship.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy materials, work in confined spaces, and spend long periods standing, bending, or working at heights.
- Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in trades math, mechanical troubleshooting, and operating tools like pipe threaders, saws, and welding torches
