Assistant Estimator
Job Description
Position Summary
We’re partnered with a union-signatory contractor recognized for its expertise in heavy civil mechanical infrastructure—from wastewater systems to pumps, tanks, and large-diameter valves. As their project load continues to expand, they are seeking an Assistant Estimator to help support competitive, well-organized bids on complex public works projects.
This role is ideal for someone with early estimating experience or a background in field operations who’s ready to contribute to meaningful infrastructure work. You’ll focus specifically on the mechanical scopes tied to civil systems—buried piping, wet utility connections, pump stations, tank infrastructure, and more.
Key Responsibilities
Support the estimating team in preparing accurate bids for mechanical scopes including piping systems, pump stations, tanks, and associated appurtenances
Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for buried utilities, large valves, and mechanical components from plans and specs
Help evaluate bid documents, plans, and addenda to identify scope requirements, clarifications, and risks
Assist in soliciting and organizing quotes from vendors and subcontractors for mechanical materials and services
Attend job walks and pre-bid meetings to gather site-specific data
Help prepare bid packages, internal review documents, and pricing summaries
Work closely with the estimating and operations team to review constructability and labor productivity
Maintain and update cost history and material pricing databases for mechanical work
Contribute to project handoff documentation to field and project teams after award
Typical Projects Include:
Wastewater and water treatment facility mechanical packages
Pump stations, lift stations, and tank installations
Buried mechanical piping systems (water/sewer/storm)
Large valve and vault installations
Civil utility improvements with integrated mechanical scopes
Qualifications
1–3 years of estimating experience in mechanical or heavy civil construction OR hands-on project support background (field/engineering)
Ability to interpret detailed civil/mechanical drawings and project specs
Familiarity with piping layouts, mechanical vaults, valve schedules, and tank systems
Strong Excel skills; exposure to estimating tools such as On-Screen Takeoff, Bluebeam, or HCSS is a plus
Eagerness to learn in a collaborative environment and contribute to a high-performing estimating team
Union labor or prevailing wage project experience is a plus
Field or trade experience in plumbing/mechanical scopes beneficial
