Diesel Shaft Mechanic (Ship Repair)
Venture Dynamics is seeking experienced Diesel Shaft Mechanics to support Navy and commercial ship repair projects in Norfolk, VA. The Diesel Shaft Mechanic is responsible for repairing, maintaining, and installing diesel propulsion systems, shafting, bearings, couplings, and other mechanical equipment aboard vessels. This role is ideal for skilled marine mechanics with experience in shipyard environments. Assignments are project-based and may continue based on performance and contract demand.
Responsibilities
- Disassemble, inspect, repair, and reassemble diesel engines, propulsion shafting, bearings, couplings, and related mechanical equipment.
- Perform precision shaft alignment using dial indicators, laser alignment systems, and other measuring instruments.
- Remove and install propellers, rudders, stern tube seals, bearings, and associated propulsion components.
- Troubleshoot and repair marine pumps, gearboxes, reduction gears, and auxiliary mechanical systems.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, work packages, and repair specifications.
- Conduct inspections and verify equipment meets manufacturer and shipyard specifications before returning to service.
- Assist with testing and operational checks following repairs to ensure proper system performance.
- Maintain clean, organized work areas while following shipyard procedures and quality standards.
Requirements
- Minimum five (5) years of experience as a Diesel Shaft Mechanic or Marine Mechanic in a ship repair environment.
- Experience working on Navy or commercial vessel propulsion systems.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, shafting systems, bearings, couplings, pumps, and mechanical alignment.
- Ability to read blueprints, technical manuals, and repair specifications.
- Must be able to obtain or maintain DBIDS access.
- Must successfully pass a background check and drug screening.
- Must possess basic hand tools required to perform assigned work.
- Ability to lift, climb, crawl, and work aboard vessels, including confined and elevated spaces.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience supporting U.S. Navy ship repair projects.
- OSHA 10 Maritime certification.
- Experience using laser alignment equipment and vibration analysis tools.
- Current DBIDS credential or active shipyard access.
- Additional marine mechanical certifications or technical training.
Additional Information
Work is performed aboard vessels, in dry docks, and in industrial shipyard environments supporting Navy and commercial repair operations. Duties may involve confined or elevated spaces and active production areas. Exposure to industrial noise and environmental conditions is expected. PPE is required in accordance with site safety policies, and respiratory protection may be required based on task or location. Reliable transportation is required to report to assigned shipyard or project locations. Work schedules may include overtime, nights, weekends, and variable shifts based on production needs.
