We provide nutrition, advocacy, counseling, shelter, and social support to seniors and preschoolers in the heart of Oakland. Position Summary:TheCustodian& Maintenance- Closerplays a vital role inmaintaininga clean, safe, and welcoming environment across all St. Marys Center facilities.This full-time positionkeeps buildings clean, safe, and orderly by performing routine cleaning, waste removal, and minor maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform routine cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and removing cobwebs.

• Clean and disinfect restrooms, kitchens, and other high-traffic shared spaces.

• Empty and sanitize trash, compost, and recycling bins throughout the facilities.

• Wipe down andmaintainsurfaces including baseboards, bannisters, windows, and doors.

• Support deep-cleaning schedules, including periodic intensivecleaningof client rooms and communal areas.

• Performs light groundskeeping tomaintainthe cleanliness and appearance of buildingand propertyexteriors and entryways.

• Monitor and replenish cleaning and janitorial supplies; notify supervisor of low inventory.

• Follow all safety protocols, including the proper use and storage of cleaning chemicals and equipment.

• Assistwith room turnover in the Transitional Housing program, ensuring rooms are clean and ready for new residents.

• Collaborate with program and facilities staff to respond to urgent cleaning needs.

• Performadditionalcustodial or light maintenance duties as assigned.

• Closemain facility Monday-Friday, ensuring all doors and windows are secured, alarms are set, and property gates are locked.

Qualifications:

• Prior custodial, maintenance,or janitorial experience preferred.

• Familiarity with cleaning products, equipment, and safety procedures.

• Ability to work independently and take initiative.

• Strong attention to detail and time management skills.

• Commitment tomaintaininga respectful and inclusive environment.

• Valid CA driver's license

Working Conditions:

• This position involves standing, walking, lifting (up to 50lbs.), bending, and other physical tasks.

• Exposure tocleaning chemicals, outdoor conditions, and client-facing environments.

• The ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

• Frequent bending and stooping to clean lower surfaces (e.g., floors, baseboards).

• Kneeling to clean under furniture, toilets, or other low spaces.

• Ability to reach and clean high surfaces, such as windowsills or shelves, with step stools or ladders.

• Abilityto push and pull equipment and supply carts, trash bins, etc.

• Repetitive sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and dusting motions.

• Extended use of hand tools such as mops, brooms, and scrub brushes.

• The ability to work with cleaning agents, chemicals, and cleaning equipment in various environments.

• Must be able to clearly communicate with others to understand them and to be understood.

• Must be able to read and compose documents so that their intent is easily understood.

• Must be able to lift and move up to50pounds.

• Must be able to move inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

• Must be able to attend in-person or web-based meetings, sitting, listening, and taking notes.
