Job Description

Staff Accountant

Accounting & Finance | Chicago, IL | Full-Time | Hybrid

Join us - and do work that matters.

We're a passionate team of change-makers, diverse thinkers, and problem-solvers. Our purpose: ensuring full access to quality living and championing the power of inclusivity. We proudly serve over 7,000 individuals with disabilities and behavioral health challenges, including those who are Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing.

If you're not looking for just any job — if you're ready to build a career where your work directly supports that mission — Anixter Center is the place for you.

About the Role

As our Staff Accountant, you'll be a key part of the financial engine behind our mission — maintaining the general ledger, keeping grant-funded programs on track and audit-ready, and safeguarding the personal funds of the individuals we serve through representative-payee accounting. You'll work closely with the Accounting Manager and program staff across the Agency, turning careful, accurate financial work into services that reach thousands of Chicagoans every year.

This is a hybrid role: two days in our Administrative Offices on Wilson Ave., three days remote, Monday through Friday.

What You'll Do

  • Review grant program ledgers monthly and prepare grant vouchers, budget analyses, and reporting — while serving as the go-to contact for grant audits and inquiries.
  • Own core month-end close responsibilities: bank reconciliations, credit card and contribution posting, and AR/AP aging reconciliations.
  • Manage representative-payee accounting for SSI/SSA benefit funds, including debit card tracking and coordination with houses, case managers, and guardians.
  • Post and reconcile grant and employment billing activity, expense allocations, and recurring journal entries.
  • Support annual audits, tax filings, and the annual budgeting process alongside outside auditors.
  • Maintain an organized, audit-ready virtual filing system and contribute to special projects as they arise.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Accountancy (required).
  • 2-3 years of related accounting experience (required).
  • Experience with general ledger software such as Sage preferred; familiarity with the State of Illinois Grant CSA System a plus.
  • Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables and formulas.
  • A detail-oriented, deadline-driven mindset paired with the ability to build relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • A genuine commitment to nonprofit, mission-driven work.

Why Anixter Center

We offer a hybrid schedule, a mission you can feel good about, and the chance to grow your accounting career in the nonprofit sector.
