Janitor / Maintenance Technician I (Trainee)
Job Summary
We are seeking a dependable and motivated Janitor/Maintenance Technician I to join our facilities team. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, takes pride in maintaining clean and safe environments, and is interested in learning building maintenance skills.
Approximately 70–75% of the role focuses on janitorial services and grounds maintenance, while the remaining time is dedicated to training alongside experienced maintenance technicians to develop skills in building repairs and preventive maintenance.
The ideal candidate is a team player with a strong work ethic, excellent customer service skills, and the flexibility to work in a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities
- Clean office buildings and common areas of residential properties.
- Perform routine janitorial duties, including:
- Vacuuming, mopping, dusting, and glass cleaning
- Cleaning and stocking restrooms
- Cleaning kitchens and common areas
- Emptying trash and recycling
- Spot cleaning spills and stains
- Carpet cleaning as needed
- Maintain landscaped areas by mowing, trimming, edging, weeding, planting flowers, and trimming shrubs.
- Assist with irrigation/sprinkler system maintenance.
- Remove snow and apply ice melt to sidewalks and walkways as needed.
- Assist maintenance technicians with building repairs and preventive maintenance.
- Perform basic maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, painting, replacing ceiling tiles, and unclogging drains.
- Learn preventive maintenance and minor repairs for maintenance equipment, including floor machines, vacuums, and hand tools.
- Help with room setups for meetings and community events.
- Develop skills in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, appliance repair, and HVAC maintenance under supervision.
- Operate company vehicles to pick up supplies and complete work-related errands.
- Follow all workplace safety procedures and report hazards promptly.
- Participate in an on-call rotation as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Experience performing commercial janitorial or custodial work preferred.
- Basic knowledge of landscaping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and blowers.
- Knowledge of safe work practices and equipment operation.
- Ability to build positive working relationships with residents, customers, coworkers, and the public.
- Willingness to learn maintenance trades through on-the-job training.
- Reliable, dependable, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
Physical Requirements
This position requires frequent:
- Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and climbing ladders
- Lifting and carrying materials and equipment
- Shoveling snow and performing outdoor work in varying weather conditions
Requirements
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, physical examination, and drug screening.
- Ability to complete required workplace training.
