Part Time Medical Assistant - Work 1:1 with Sleep & Lung Specialist
Job Description
We are a growing outpatient Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine practice in Durham seeking a motivated and compassionate Medical Assistant to join our team. This is a part-time position (2-3 days per week) with potential to expand to full-time as the practice grows.
Because this is a new practice, you’ll have the unique opportunity to help shape our workflows, patient experience, and clinic culture from the ground up. We are building something that puts patients first — and we’re looking for someone who wants to be part of that journey. If you enjoy providing hands-on patient care, contributing ideas, and working closely with a physician in a collaborative environment, this is an exceptional chance to grow your clinical career.
Key Responsibilities
Room patients, take vitals, and document history in the EMR
Perform pulmonary function testing (PFTs) – training provided
Set up patients on CPAP equipment and provide basic education – training provided
Coordinate referrals, authorizations, and follow-ups
Collect copays and patient balances at the time of visit.
Collaborate with virtual team members (schedulers, billing staff, etc.)
Respond to patient messages and assist with basic phone triage
Support prescription refill requests and pharmacy communication.
Maintain exam room cleanliness and supply levels.
Use clinical judgment and attention to detail to help guide patient care — we value team members who think critically, speak up when something is important, and collaborate with the physician to ensure patients receive the best care possible.
Be an engaged part of the healthcare team — not just checking boxes, but actively participating in the care process and making patients feel seen, heard, and supported.
Help design how the practice works — from improving patient flow to refining communication systems, your input will help us build a practice that is efficient, compassionate, and truly patient-centered.
