Excavator Operator - Pipe Crew

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Reports to the foreman, operates excavator within safety guidelines. Prior experience working with water lines, sanitary, and storm lines is required. Required duties include, but not limited to:

• Operate the excavator/hoe and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
• Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment, conducting pre-operational checks on equipment, and clean, lubricate and refill equipment as necessary.
• Ensure trench is excavated to the proper depth/grade.
• Responsible for placement of water, storm and sanitary sewer pipe in the excavation.
• Follow directions of ground crew regarding craning, gravel placement and grading.
• Operate Excavator/Hoe on public roadways and residential areas, maintaining proper awareness of one’s surroundings.
• Ensure a sound understanding of the issues involving ground disturbance.
• Be aware of proper rigging of pipe, manhole barrels, etc. and ensure safe work procedures are followed during the lowering of materials into the excavation.
• Operate other heavy equipment and other construction related duties as required.
• Work in a productive and efficient manner while maintaining the highest level of quality work.
• Be self-motivated and ambitious.
• Be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

Qualifications, Education, Experience and Certifications

• High school diploma or G.E.D. or an equivalent combination of education and training
• Three (3) years experience as an Excavator Operator, preferably in Urban areas
• Knowledge reading locate markings and general understanding of underground and/or overhead utilities
• Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures including but not limited to back up procedures, use of flagmen and spotters, signage, incident reporting, required personal safety equipment and lifting of heavy loads
• Knowledge of equipment operation, cleaning and maintenance requirements
• Analytical and problem solving skills
• Effective communication skills (both listening and verbal)
• Ability to read and understand field survey layouts, policies, procedures and instructions
• Trench safety certification

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Will be exposed to outside weather conditions, be prepared for extreme heat and cold
• May at times be exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electric shock; loud noise level and vibration.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear
• Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
