Job Description

Job Description

The Community Coordinator role builds and maintains relationships across the catchment area — with residents, community organizations, faith leaders, elected officials, and city agencies — to expand programmatic reach, support violence prevention efforts, and ensure the Cure Violence model is embedded in and reflective of the community it serves.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the program's primary representative within the designated catchment area and precinct.
  • Build and sustain relationships with community-based organizations, faith leaders, tenant associations, elected officials, local businesses, and city agency partners.
  • Attend and represent the program at Community Board meetings, NYCHA Tenant Association meetings, MAP/NSTAT meetings, and other relevant neighborhood convenings.
  • Identify new community groups and public or private initiatives with potential for partnership or funding alignment.
  • Attend city agency briefings and community meetings for key community and faith leader stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and promote anti-gun violence workshops, resource fairs, rallies, and pro-social community events in the catchment area.
  • Organize themed weekends of action focused on public safety, bringing together community organizations and affected populations.
  • Support and help coordinate community responses to shooting incidents within 72 hours, in accordance with program protocols.
  • Develop and disseminate public education and outreach materials, talking points, and presentation decks for the program.
  • Support the community events of other CMS partners and relevant CBOs in the precinct area.
  • Engage in outreach and recruitment for potential program participants.
  • Identify emerging community issues affecting public safety and surface them to the Program Manager to inform the program's on-the-ground response.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of community activities, partnership contacts, and outreach efforts as required by ONS/DYCD.
  • Support the Program Manager with tracking community mobilization deliverables and data entry into required reporting systems.
  • Participate in all required ONS/DYCD meetings, trainings, and ad hoc sessions.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ties to and familiarity with the program's target neighborhood or comparable high-need community.
  • Experience in community organizing, outreach, coalition building, or related work — formal or informal.
  • Ability to build trust across diverse stakeholders: residents, government, faith community, and service providers.
  • Strong verbal communication and facilitation skills; comfortable speaking publicly and running meetings.
  • Organized and detail-oriented — able to manage multiple community relationships and event logistics simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in basic office tools (email, word processing, spreadsheets); comfort with documentation and data tracking requirements.
  • Availability for non-traditional hours including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Willingness to travel to community events, as needed.
  • Lived experience in communities impacted by violence is a significant plus.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college or relevant training preferred.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds.
