Position Overview

The Primary Instructor will serve as the principal yoga instructor supporting Veterans and employees of the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. The instructor will deliver safe, patient-centered wellness yoga through virtual and in-person sessions. This is an instructional position and does not include supervisory responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct live 30-minute and 50-minute yoga classes for Veterans and medical center employees.
  • Provide virtual and in-person instruction according to the approved class schedule.
  • Deliver gentle, low-impact yoga practices appropriate for participants who have been cleared for physical activity.
  • Adapt yoga techniques, movements, and protocols to each participants physical abilities and limitations.
  • Provide prenatal yoga instruction when assigned, including practices appropriate to the participants ability and stage of pregnancy.
  • Educate participants about the wellness and health benefits associated with yoga.
  • Maintain a safe environment and protect patient confidentiality.
  • Verify each Veterans physical location at the beginning of virtual sessions.
  • Contact emergency services when a medical emergency occurs during a virtual session and the participant cannot act independently.
  • Document patient encounters in the electronic medical record on the same day and complete the associated note within 48 hours.
  • Maintain attendance records, sign-in/sign-out documentation, and service tickets.
  • Report schedule changes or cancellations promptly and support continuity of scheduled services.
  • Follow all applicable professional conduct, privacy, security, and dress requirements.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Completion of a minimum 200-hour yoga teacher training program.
  • Experience providing yoga or wellness instruction to adults in individual and group settings.
  • Experience adapting yoga instruction for participants with different physical abilities.
  • Experience working with Veterans, healthcare populations, older adults, or individuals with common medical conditions is preferred.
  • Prenatal yoga experience is preferred when assigned to pregnancy wellness sessions.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Basic proficiency with personal computers, virtual meeting platforms, and electronic documentation systems.
  • Physical ability to demonstrate and perform yoga instruction without restriction.

Certification

  • Current Yoga Alliance registration as a Registered Yoga Teacher, RYT-200 or higher
  • Current Basic Life Support certification
  • Negative tuberculosis test completed within the previous 12 months
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening

Clearance/Security

No security clearance is specified. The selected instructor must successfully complete required fingerprinting, background investigation, VetPro credentialing, e-QIP documentation, and PIV credentialing. Required training includes CPRS, Privacy and HIPAA, and VA Privacy and Information Security Awareness and Rules of Behavior.

Services may be performed virtually or on-site at:

  • Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, 2002 Holcombe Boulevard, Houston, TX 77030
  • Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Tomball, TX

Work Schedule

Classes may be scheduled between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on weekdays or weekends, excluding federal holidays. Specific class days and times will follow the approved schedule.
