Characteristics of Work

Under the direction of the Teacher, the Classroom Disabilities Aide is responsible for attending to the basic needs of children with diagnosed sabilities, organizing activities that stimulate the children’s physical, emotional, intellectual, and social growth, helping children explore their interests, developing their talents and independence, building self-esteem, and learning how to interact with others. Incumbents are expected to work at various sites as assigned in order to meet the needs of children with disabilities.

Essential Functions

These essential functions include but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified by the Agency and/or as prescribed by the Vice President of Head Start and Early Childhood Programs.

Planning and Developing

ssists in preparing and implementing daily plans, schedules, and activities in accordance with the Division of Children’s Services’ work plan.

Gives input into arranging classroom space into well-organized learning centers.

Assists in planning field trips in accordance with program schedules.

Assists in determining the need for classroom supplies and equipment.

Assists in providing positive discipline and supervision of children at all times.

Participates in Individualized Education Program meetings as required.

Gives input into conducting developmental screening, assessment and evaluation of children with disabilities.

Imlementing Activities

Demonstrates and encourages good health and safety practices.

Provides positive discipline and supervision for children at all times.

Rides with and supervises children with disabilities during visits to various offices for professional services.

Assists in maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment.

Assists in establishing classroom rules with teachers and children.

Demonstrates and encourages good eating habits in accordance with the agency’s family style meal services procedures.

Rides with Bus Drivers as assigned.

Accompanies Teacher on a minimum of two (2) scheduled home visits per child per program year.

Record Keeping and Reporting

Reports cases of suspected child abuse/neglect in accordance with state law.

Communicating and Guiding

Meets, greets, observes, and assesses children daily.

Demonstrates support of individual children in a positive and non-threatening manner.

Training and Supporting

Participates in staff meetings, parent meetings, and training sessions as required.

Participates in educational and professional training as required to maintain appropriate credentials.

Recruit volunteers and in-kind contributions.

Serves on program committees and boards of other organizations affiliated with children and families.

Additional Responsibilities

Performs other duties and assignments as directed by supervisor.

Qualifications

High School Diploma with three (3) years of experience working in a preschool setting with children diagnosed with disabilities.

Special Requirements

Applicant must:

-pass Criminal Background and Child Abuse Central Registry Checks;

-meet State health requirements;

-have the ability to communicate effectively;

-demonstrate proper use of grammar, legible manuscript, and cursive writing.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands to fingers, hand or feel objects when interacting with children. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 40 lbs if necessary to lift a child. While performing the duties of this job the employee primarily works in an indoor environment.

Demonstrates and encourages good eating habits in accordance with the agency’s family style meal services procedures.
