Automation & Controls Technician
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Automation & Controls Technician to join our growing OEM engineering team! This role focuses on refining electrical and instrumentation control components and systems for industrial water recycling equipment used in sand/aggregate mining, precious minerals & stones, municipal, energy, pulp & paper, and building sectors. As an Automation Controls Technician, you will provide the skills necessary to support PHOENIX in the areas of control system implementation, configuration, and site startup as well as PLC/HMI program debugging. supporting a wide range of industrial applications. This position reports directly to and works closely with the Automation & Controls Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Traveling to customers’ facilities to set up and commissioning control systems to ensure seamless operation from the start. Provide technical assistance to customers including field startup training.
- Testing and configuring instrumentation to meet operational and project-specific requirements.
- Troubleshooting PLC programs & touchscreen HMIs for automation across various applications to ensure optimal system performance.
- Providing thorough documentation of systems, processes, and start-up reports. This role requires a broad skill set to handle a variety of applications and ensure systems operate efficiently and effectively.
- Conduct shop testing of control panels, starter panels, and automation systems.
- Document technical data in compliance with engineering policies and procedures.
- Provide technical support and function as a key resource for automation-related inquiries.
- Collaborate with customers and suppliers, including occasional domestic travel (25-35%) for commissioning and troubleshooting.
Qualifications & Requirements
- 1-3+ years of experience in PLC and HMI programming, SCADA development, industrial electrician, and/or control panel fabrication
Preferred Skills & Attributes
- Strong background in PLC programming, relay control logic, and HMI programming.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and the ability to review schematics, specifications, and drawings.
- Solid analog and digital circuit knowledge including 4-20mA circuits.
- Hands-on experience with electrical engineering tools and test equipment.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to engage with customers and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
- Strong skills in spreadsheets and word processing applications are necessary for effective documentation and reporting.
Travel Requirement
This position requires 25 – 35% travel, involving visits to client sites and other locations as needed to support project implementation and troubleshooting.
