Position Overview
We are seeking a passionate, creative Math Teacher to join our mission-driven team. In this role, you'll teach mathematics to small groups of students with high-functioning autism (maximum 8 per class). You'll have the opportunity to make a profound impact by tailoring instruction to each student's unique learning profile, strengths, and challenges while maintaining high academic standards and fostering mathematical thinking.
Key Responsibilities
- Instructional Excellence
- Design and deliver engaging, differentiated math instruction aligned with grade-level standards
- Implement evidence-based teaching strategies proven effective for students with autism
- Utilize visual supports, concrete manipulatives, and multisensory approaches to mathematics
- Incorporate structured programs
- Break down complex concepts into clear, sequential steps
- Make abstract mathematical concepts concrete and accessible through systematic instruction
- Foster inquiry-based learning while providing the structure students need
Autism-Affirming Support
- Develop individualized learning plans that build on student strengths and interests
- Recognize and accommodate sensory sensitivities during math instructionSupport executive function challenges (organization, planning, task initiation, working memory)
- Provide clear, explicit instructions and visual schedules
- Build predictable routines while gradually introducing flexibility
- Address math anxiety and build student confidence through success-oriented experiences
- Integrate special interests into mathematical problems and examples when appropriate
Student Relationships & Communication
- Build authentic, trust-based relationships with students in our small class setting
- Understand and respect each student's communication style and social preferences
- Provide direct, clear feedback without ambiguity
- Communicate regularly with families about progress, strategies, and celebrations
- Collaborate with families to ensure consistency between home and school
Classroom Environment
- Create a calm, structured, and sensory-friendly learning space
- Implement visual supports, schedules, and organizational systems
- Establish clear expectations and consistent routines
- Minimize sensory overload while maintaining engaging instruction
- Use autism-affirming language and approaches
- Celebrate neurodivergent thinking and problem-solving styles
Job Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Education, or related field
- Valid Arizona teaching certification (or ability to obtain)
- Vaild IVP Card
- Experience teaching mathematics at the K-12 level
- Demonstrated understanding of autism spectrum characteristics
- Strong content knowledge in mathematics across grade levels
- Ability to provide explicit, systematic instruction
- Excellent communication skills with students, families, and colleagues
- Commitment to autism-affirming, neurodiversity-celebrating education
- Patience, consistency, and ability to remain calm under pressure
Preferred:
- Master's degree in Education, Special Education, or Mathematics Education
- Special education certification or autism endorsement
- Training in structured math programs
- Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and differentiation
- Understanding of executive function challenges
- Experience with visual supports, social stories, and structured teaching methods
