1st Class Shipfitter

Responsible for the layout, fabrication, assembly, installation, and repair of structural components for commercial and military vessels. Reads and interprets blueprints, technical drawings, and work specifications to accurately fit and align steel structures, bulkheads, decks, foundations, and hull sections. Utilizes cutting torches, grinders, hand tools, and precision measuring equipment to prepare materials and ensure proper fit-up prior to welding. Performs structural modifications and repairs while maintaining strict adherence to shipyard quality standards and safety regulations. Works effectively in confined spaces, elevated work areas, and demanding production environments to meet project schedules and customer requirements.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and engineering drawings.
  • Lay out, fit, align, and assemble structural steel components.
  • Operate oxy-fuel cutting torches, grinders, and fabrication equipment.
  • Measure, mark, and verify dimensions using precision measuring tools.
  • Prepare materials for welding and final assembly.
  • Install and repair ship structures, including bulkheads, decks, foundations, and hull components.
  • Follow OSHA regulations and shipyard safety procedures.
  • Collaborate with welders, supervisors, and other trades to complete projects on time and within specifications.
  • Maintain quality workmanship and ensure compliance with company and customer standards.
