Field Service Technician (NETA Equivalent experience)

Smart Tech
Livermore, CA, US Full Time
35USD - 85USD per hour

Job Description

Job Description

Strong candidates will have:

  • Hands-on testing experience— not just electrical maintenance or construction
  • Medium and/or high voltage exposure— know what voltage levels they've actually worked on
  • Named test equipment experience— Megger, Doble, Omicron, SEL, Doble M4000, etc.
  • Ability to explain testing procedures and results— can they talk through a TTR or power factor test without coaching?
  • Report writing capability— they've generated field service reports, not just filled in forms

Screening Questions

  1. "Walk me through the types of equipment you've tested — what voltage levels?"
  2. "What test equipment have you personally operated in the field?"
  3. "Have you worked under NETA standards, NICET, or similar testing frameworks?"
  4. "If required, could you pass a NETA Level II / III / IV exam within the next 6–12 months?"
  5. "Are you currently NETA or NICET certified? If not, have you ever tested to those standards?"
  6. "Describe a time you found a deficiency during testing — what did you do with that finding?"

A qualified apparatus tech will know various equipment types, voltage classes, and test sets.

Other qualifications;

  • "Electrician" experience only — pull-and-terminate work does not equal testing experience
  • Vague resume language like "electrical maintenance" with no mention of test equipment or standards
  • Years of experience that don't match the voltage levels or complexity claimed
  • No mention of field reports, NETA, or commissioning work

Military Equivalents — Strong Source

  • Navy Nuclear (EM/ETN/MM):Excellent technical foundation, high NETA pass rate — treat as NETA II minimum
  • Army Prime Power (12P):Strong medium-voltage field experience, solid apparatus background
  • Navy Electronics Technician (ET):Good for lower-level roles; strong fundamentals
