Job Title: Dietary Aide/Cook
Reports To: Dietary Manager/Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Job Type: Full-Time/Part-Time

Job Summary:

The Dietary Aide/Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, appealing meals to residents in a nursing home setting. The individual in this role will follow food safety guidelines, assist with meal planning, food preparation, and ensure that residents' dietary needs are met based on their medical conditions, preferences, and special requests. The Dietary Aide/Cook will work closely with the dietary team and nursing staff to ensure that all dietary guidelines and policies are followed.

Key Responsibilities:

Meal Preparation & Cooking:

  • Prepare and cook meals according to established dietary guidelines, recipes, and the residents' needs.
  • Ensure meals are nutritious, well-balanced, and appealing in appearance and taste.
  • Portion and serve food in accordance with prescribed meal plans.
  • Assist with the preparation of special diets such as low-sodium, low-sugar, or pureed foods, as directed.
  • Ensure food is cooked at the proper temperatures and served in a timely manner.
  • Maintain kitchen cleanliness and organization throughout food preparation and service.

Dietary Support:

  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of snacks and special requests for residents.
  • Work with the dietary team to ensure that any food allergies, dietary restrictions, and preferences are adhered to.
  • Communicate with nursing staff and supervisors regarding any dietary changes, preferences, or concerns.

Food Safety & Sanitation:

  • Maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment by following established safety, cleanliness, and sanitation protocols.
  • Follow food safety guidelines for handling, storing, and preparing food to prevent contamination and spoilage.
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, utensils, and work surfaces regularly.
  • Ensure proper labeling, rotation, and storage of food items to prevent waste.

Administrative Support:

  • Assist in maintaining inventory and ordering kitchen supplies as needed.
  • Monitor food inventory levels and report any shortages to the Dietary Manager.
  • Maintain records of food served and meal preparation for residents.
Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Previous experience working in a healthcare food service setting, especially in a nursing home or hospital, preferred.
  • Certification in food safety or ServSafe (preferred but not required).

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and a passion for providing high-quality meals to residents.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multitasking environment.
  • Physical ability to lift and move items up to 15lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in a hot kitchen environment.
Working Conditions:
  • The Dietary Aide/Cook works in a kitchen environment that can involve exposure to heat, noise, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Requires standing, bending, and lifting throughout the shift.
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on the needs of the nursing home.
