Traveling Certified Medical Assistant (Nephrology)

Summary


This position is part-time with varied hours. (min of 20 hrs/wk, often more) Travel will be to local clinics serving the Detroit metropolitan area. Travel is reimbursed at the standard IRS mileage rate.




    Key Responsibilities

    • Deliver experienced, patientcentered care to individuals with chronic kidney disease and complex comorbidities.
    • Serve as a reliable, adaptable clinical resource for physicians, advanced practice providers, and administrative staff.
    • Travel routinely to designated nephrology clinic sites to provide clinical coverage and maintain consistent patient care workflows.
    • Perform comprehensive clinical intake, including vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history updates, and symptom assessment.
    • Support nephrologists and APPs during clinic days, ensuring efficient patient flow and timely documentation.
    • Prepare and maintain exam rooms, ensuring cleanliness, safety compliance, and readiness for patient encounters.
    • Obtain and process urine samples, pointofcare tests, and other diagnostic specimens per office protocols.
    • Document patient encounters with accuracy using the electronic health record (EHR).
    • Provide patient education regarding medications, diet, chronic disease management, and treatment plans.
    • Assist with providerapproved medication dispensing or sampling when appropriate.
    • Navigate insurance and clinical workflows by completing medication prior authorizations, including nephrology and internalmedicinerelated medications.
    • Communicate with pharmacies, insurance plans, and other healthcare entities to support continuity of care.
    • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and internal SOPs.
    • Collaborate with frontoffice staff during peak patient volumes or staffing gaps.


    Required Qualifications

    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or equivalent).
    • 5+ years of medical assistant experience, preferably in specialty care settings.
    • Strong phlebotomy skills, including venipuncture, specimen handling, and compliance with safety protocols.
    • Strong background in internal medicine, chronic disease management, and complex patient care.
    • Proficiency in electronic health record systems and standard Microsoft Office applications.
    • Excellent communication, organization, and multitasking skills.
    • Ability to travel between multiple office locations.
    • Ability to pass a criminal background check.


    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in nephrology or other chroniccare specialties.
    • Demonstrated experience completing medication prior authorizations, including internalmedicine and nephrologyrelated medications.
    • Strong understanding of renalrelated patient care, labs, and medication regimens.
