Interventional Radiology Registered Nurse (RN)Job Summary

The Interventional Radiology (IR) Registered Nurse provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Working alongside interventional radiologists and multidisciplinary healthcare teams, the IR RN is responsible for pre-procedure assessments, procedural sedation, patient monitoring, recovery care, and patient education while ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and quality care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments prior to procedures.
  • Verify informed consent, patient history, allergies, medications, and laboratory results.
  • Prepare patients for interventional radiology procedures.
  • Administer moderate (conscious) sedation and monitor patients throughout procedures according to hospital policy.
  • Continuously monitor cardiac rhythm, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, respiratory status, and neurological status.
  • Assist physicians during a variety of vascular and non-vascular interventional procedures.
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and emergency medications as ordered.
  • Recognize and respond rapidly to complications or changes in patient condition.
  • Provide post-procedure monitoring, recovery care, and discharge education.
  • Collaborate with physicians, technologists, anesthesia providers, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical documentation.
  • Adhere to infection prevention, radiation safety, and sterile technique standards.
  • Participate in emergency response situations and provide ACLS interventions when necessary.
  • Educate patients and families regarding procedures, recovery expectations, medications, and follow-up care.

Required Qualifications
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Current BLS Certification
  • Current ACLS Certification
  • Minimum of 2 years recent Interventional Radiology experience preferred
  • Moderate Sedation experience required
  • Strong IV insertion and vascular access skills
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Excellent critical thinking, communication, and patient assessment skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous travel nursing experience
  • Critical Care, Emergency Department, PACU, or Cath Lab experience
  • Experience circulating complex IR procedures
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (preferred by some facilities)
