Position Type: Full-time, 10-month, Benefits Eligible
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Alternate Achievement Pathway Teacher (formerly known as “Special Needs”), under the supervision of the Early Learning Center Principal will provide an active learning environment where all students can excel, academically, physically and socially. The Teacher will provide individualized learning goals and support meaningful achievement through focusing on each student’s abilities, growth, and progress while honoring their unique learning needs.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Prepare lessons plans using evidence-based assigned curricular (such as Unique Learning System), supplemental resources and tools such as Thinking Maps
- Implement a variety of instructional strategies and differentiated instruction with students of varying abilities and diverse backgrounds
- Comply with state mandated NYS Standards while modifying instruction to support students’ progress towards expected standards
- Administer New York State Alternate Assessments (NYSAA) and any other appropriate assessments to track student progress
- Write IEP goals in a timely and data-driven manner
- Incorporate specific AAC goals and communication accommodations into daily lesson plans as mandated by student IEPs (when applicable)
- Comply with school policies and procedures
- Support the school’s Strategic Planning initiative with an emphasis on strengthening culture while demonstrating commitment to the school’s purpose, vision and mission.
- Develop and implement behavior intervention plans, teach self- regulation strategies, and manage classroom crises using evidence-based techniques
- Act as a primary contact for parents while working alongside speech and language therapists and other related service providers to ensure an individualized and enriching learning environment for all students
- Perform other related duties as required and assigned

- Ability to establish rapport and build professional relationships with students
- Excellent time management, planning, and organizational skills
- Demonstrate ability to use technology (SMART board/TV, laptops, devices) effectively to support instruction.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- New York State Certification-Teacher of the Deaf
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including proficiency in English and American Sign Language (ASL)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Suite
SECURITY CLEARANCE:
- Required clearances include medical clearance, fingerprinted by the NYC Board of Ed, SCR, and SEL clearance
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Prolonged periods of walking in and around the building
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times
