Position Overview

The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading engineering strategy, design development, technical risk management, constructability reviews, and engineering support for renewable energy projects throughout development, preconstruction, and execution phases. This role serves as the technical leader supporting Preconstruction, Estimating, Procurement, and Project Execution teams to ensure projects are designed, priced, procured, and executed in alignment with customer requirements, company standards, and project objectives.


The Engineering Manager provides technical leadership for project pursuits, design optimization, equipment and vendor evaluations, engineering partner management, and continuous improvement initiatives. This individual serves as the engineering subject matter expert, providing recommendations that support project decisions, risk assessments, estimate development, procurement strategies, and vendor selection activities.


Essential Functions

  • Lead engineering activities supporting project development, estimating, procurement, and construction execution.
  • Serve as the engineering subject matter expert for project development and preconstruction efforts, providing technical recommendations to support project decisions, risk assessments, estimate development, procurement strategies, and vendor selection.
  • Lead technical review and evaluation of customer Requests for Proposal (RFPs), Requests for Information (RFIs), technical specifications, and owner requirements to identify scope gaps, design risks, execution constraints, and commercial impacts.
  • Translate customer requirements into executable engineering designs, technical assumptions, and project execution strategies that support estimating, procurement, vendor evaluations, and project pursuits.
  • Develop conceptual, preliminary, and detailed utility-scale solar and battery energy storage (BESS) designs utilizing industry-standard engineering and design tools.
  • Perform site layout development and optimization for solar and BESS projects, incorporating civil, electrical, environmental, permitting, interconnection, and operational requirements.
  • Generate engineering deliverables supporting estimating activities, including quantities, equipment takeoffs, single-line diagrams, site plans, design criteria, and engineering assumptions.
  • Collaborate with Estimating to validate quantities, labor assumptions, equipment selections, productivity factors, and technical assumptions incorporated into project estimates.
  • Evaluate design alternatives to optimize project economics, improve constructability, reduce project risk, and support equipment and vendor selection decisions.
  • Lead constructability reviews and value engineering initiatives to improve project execution, reduce risk, and optimize total installed cost.
  • Manage engineering consultants, design firms, and technical partners throughout project development and execution.
  • Establish engineering standards, design criteria, and technical governance processes to promote consistency and quality across the project portfolio.
  • Review engineering deliverables for compliance with project requirements, applicable codes, customer specifications, utility standards, and company standards.
  • Lead technical compliance reviews to ensure proposed designs satisfy contractual, regulatory, and operational requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership during vendor and supplier evaluations, including bid reviews, technical compliance assessments, equipment comparisons, and recommendation development.
  • Lead technical due diligence and qualification efforts for engineering firms, equipment manufacturers, subcontractors, and strategic suppliers.
  • Develop technical bid tabulations and vendor scorecards to support procurement recommendations based on technical capability, quality, schedule performance, lifecycle cost, warranty considerations, and overall project value.
  • Support Procurement through development of technical specifications, bid packages, scopes of work, and supplier evaluation criteria.
  • Support contract reviews and provide technical input for EPC agreements, equipment supply agreements, engineering agreements, and subcontract scopes of work.
  • Coordinate engineering responses to customer technical clarifications, design review comments, and procurement-related inquiries throughout development and preconstruction phases.
  • Support proposal development through preparation of technical narratives, design concepts, engineering assumptions, and customer-facing technical presentations.
  • Collaborate with Scheduling, Procurement, Construction, and Operations teams to ensure alignment between engineering deliverables and project execution requirements.
  • Identify, evaluate, and communicate engineering, constructability, procurement, and execution risks to project stakeholders and leadership teams.
  • Support project change management efforts through engineering evaluations, scope assessments, and technical recommendations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with engineering partners, equipment suppliers, industry organizations, customers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Communicate and reinforce team expectations based on corporate objectives.
  • Create and maintain a continuous improvement process to monitor engineering performance, capture lessons learned, and implement best practices.
  • Coordinate with project stakeholders ranging from project teams and functional leadership to executive management and customers.
  • Develop high-performing engineering teams through supervision, training, coaching, mentoring, and professional development.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Builds relationships with vendors, suppliers, engineering partners, customers and other company departments in support of resolving issues during design and/or pre-bid phases.
  • Lead design meetings and manage our engineering partners in support of generating of the IFC design documents, as bid.
  • Support regional leadership with review and comment of draft EPC Agreement and scope-of-work documents necessary for Project sales.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in engineering, design, construction, project development, or renewable energy project execution.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience leading engineering teams, engineering consultants, or multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Experience supporting utility-scale renewable energy projects, including solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), substations, or related infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting project pursuits, estimating, procurement, vendor evaluations, equipment selection, and preconstruction activities.
  • Strong understanding of engineering design processes, constructability reviews, project execution planning, and risk management.
  • Experience utilizing industry-standard engineering, modeling, and design tools to develop project designs, generate engineering deliverables, support estimating activities, and evaluate technical solutions.
  • Strong understanding of applicable industry codes, standards, permitting requirements, and utility interconnection considerations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with customers, engineering partners, suppliers, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively self-manage, prioritize competing demands, and execute under schedule-driven environments.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and engineering-related software platforms.
  • Ability to identify, elevate, and assist with resolving technical, commercial, procurement, and execution-related project challenges.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Working Conditions

  • 25% travel is required. Projects are nationally based.
  • Construction Site Environment – physical ability to stand, walk, crawl, bend, reach and climb. Exposed to high noise levels.
  • Office Environment – extensive sitting at desk and computer; some standing, bending at the waist, stooping and reaching required; ability to lift 5-20 pounds occasionally.

Employee Status: Full-time (Exempt)


Salary / Pay Range: $85K-$170K


Location: Minneapolis, MN (Mendota Heights)
