An appliance technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing residential and or commercial appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, washers, dryers.

Key responsibilities typically include:

  • Diagnosing breakdowns and faults in appliances and identifying the cause.
  • Performing maintenance and preventive checks to ensure appliances operate efficiently.
  • Repairing or replacing defective parts, such as motors, switches, thermostats, and electronic components.
  • Installing new appliances and ensuring correct functioning.
  • Advising managers and tenants on proper appliance use and future maintenance needs.
  • Managing paperwork for billing, invoicing, and documenting repairs and services performed.
  • Maintaining inventory of necessary parts and tools and ordering replacements as needed.
  • Staying updated on new models, technologies, and safety standards in the appliance industry.
  • Delivering effective customer service and clear communication regarding repairs and maintenance.

Typical requirements for the role:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Technical or vocational training in appliance repair (postsecondary training preferred)
  • Relevant certifications, e.g., National Appliance Service Technician Certification (NASTeC)
  • Manual dexterity and ability to lift heavy equipment
  • Strong diagnostic, problem-solving, and technical skills
  • Excellent communication and customer service abilities
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, sometimes traveling to job sites
