Position Summary
The RN Trainer is responsible for delivering nurse delegation, medication administration training, and health-related instruction for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) and unlicensed staff working with individuals with developmental disabilities in community-based settings. The RN Trainer will ensure all training is compliant with Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) and Illinois Nurse Practice Act requirements.
'05; Key Responsibilities
️ Staff Training & Instruction
- Provide Medication Administration Training (MAT) and competency evaluations to DSPs in accordance with IDHS Rule 116
- Train staff on health-related tasks, including seizure protocols, diabetes care, G-tube and trach care, infection control, and emergency response
- Develop and facilitate ongoing health and safety trainings as required by state regulations and agency standards
- Maintain clear and timely training records and ensure DSP certifications remain current
Compliance & Oversight
- Ensure all training meets the Illinois Administrative Code Rule 116 and Nurse Practice Act
- Complete documentation of medication competency evaluations and retraining when required
- Participate in audits and internal reviews of medication errors and retraining plans
- Serve as a clinical resource for staff, managers, and agency leadership
Health Support & Clinical Guidance
- Provide oversight and clinical guidance related to medication administration and health procedures
- Review incident reports and offer feedback or additional staff training as needed
- Work with the RN Delegation Team to ensure consistency in training and clinical expectations across programs.
Required Qualifications
- Current, unrestricted Illinois RN license
- Must meet qualifications as a Nurse-Trainer per DHS Rule 116, including:
- Two years of full-time clinical experience as an RN
- Completion of the DHS-approved Nurse-Trainer course or willingness to complete it upon hire
- Knowledge of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act, DHS Rule 115/116, and medication administration requirements for DSPs
- Strong communication, teaching, and organizational skills
- Ability to travel to multiple sites across Illinois
- Clinical Reviewer
- Must pass all required background checks, including Illinois Healthcare Worker Registry verification
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience training staff in developmental disability settings (CILA, ICF/DD, etc.)
- Familiarity with Therap, EHR, or other electronic health documentation platforms
- CPR/First Aid Instructor Certification (optional but preferred)
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
