Position Summary

Substitute childcare staff support lead and assistant teachers in creating a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment. This is an on-call, flexible position. Substitutes may be contacted in advance for planned coverage or on short notice the morning/day care is needed.

Strong communication and teamwork are essential, as you will work closely with other staff members to support children and classroom operations.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist with implementing engaging and age-appropriate activities for children
  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and nurturing classroom environment at all times
  • Anticipate and respond to each child’s individual needs with care and attentiveness
  • Communicate openly with the childcare director regarding questions or concerns
  • Maintain a positive, professional tone that promotes a collaborative team environment
  • Communicate daily with lead and assistant teachers and the childcare director about classroom updates and needs
  • Build strong, positive relationships with children, families, and team members
  • Ensure compliance with all licensing regulations and center policies
  • Monitor supplies and notify the director when materials need replenishing
  • Maintain professional and respectful communication with families
  • Participate in bi-monthly staff meetings, safety trainings, drills, and required education
  • May be assigned to an emergency response team
  • Complete all DHHS training requirements

Education Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in child development, early childhood education, or a related field preferred
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Registered with Maine Roads to Quality (MRTQ) or willingness to register and complete required training

Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a high school diploma (or equivalent), or be enrolled in a high school, GED, or HiSET program
  • Ability and willingness to comply with all applicable laws and regulations
  • Ability to provide safe, compassionate childcare services
  • Demonstrated history of honesty and lawful conduct
  • Strong judgment and commitment to child safety and well-being
  • Must not engage in any actions detrimental to the welfare of children
  • Successful completion of all required DHHS background checks

Schedule & Work Environment
  • On-call, flexible schedule
  • Coverage may be scheduled in advance or requested same-day
  • Team-oriented, supportive childcare environment
