What You’ll Do

The Drug & Alcohol Counselor provides substance abuse counseling services and comprehensive case management support for assigned clients. This role includes clinical assessments, treatment planning, counseling, documentation, and coordination of care while supporting clients impacted by substance use and domestic violence.

Your responsibilities may include:

Clinical Counseling & Treatment:

• Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify substance use history, treatment needs, and appropriate services
• Utilize ASAM placement criteria and DSM diagnostic standards to support clinical decision-making
• Develop individualized treatment plans with realistic recovery goals
• Provide individual and group counseling sessions
• Monitor client progress and modify treatment plans as needed
• Provide education, support, and coping strategies to promote recovery

Case Management & Care Coordination:

• Provide case management services and connect clients with appropriate community resources
• Assess client needs and coordinate referrals to additional treatment providers
• Collaborate with healthcare professionals and community partners
• Support clients in accessing services that promote safety, stability, and recovery

Documentation & Compliance:

• Complete timely clinical documentation according to best practice standards and regulatory requirements
• Maintain accurate and confidential client records
• Enter required information into NJSAMS and Electronic Health Record systems
• Prepare discharge summaries and required reports
• Participate in quality improvement activities

Qualifications

Preferred Education:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Addiction Studies, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field

Required Experience:

• Three years of experience in the substance abuse treatment field
• Experience working with individuals with substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders, and/or mental health needs

Licensure Preferred:

• LAC
• LSW
• CADC
• LCSW
• LPC
• LCADC

Skills & Competencies:

• Strong assessment and clinical documentation skills
• Knowledge of addiction treatment services and counseling theories
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to develop strong therapeutic relationships
• Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities
• Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams

Additional Requirements:

• Must successfully complete Physical & Drug Screening (including THC)
• Must complete all required trainings
• Must pass Criminal Record History Clearance, FBI, and Child Abuse History Clearance
• Must pass required federal and state background checks
• Ability to meet physical requirements including sitting, standing, reaching, lifting, bending, stooping, twisting, climbing stairs, and driving as needed
