Press Brake Operator in a metal fabrication setting. These professionals set up, operate, and maintain heavy machinery to bend, cut, and shape sheet metal into precise components according to engineering blueprints and work orders
Key Responsibilities
- Machine Setup: Select the correct dies, punches, and tooling, and install them into the machine according to job specifications.
- Programming: Program CNC press brake controllers to bend metal to exact angles and dimensions.
- Material Handling: Safely load, align, and unload heavy metal sheets and parts.
- Quality Assurance: Inspect, measure, and verify the dimensions of bent metal parts using calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
- Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on the press brake and tooling (e.g., wiping guides, greasing heavy parts, and checking hydraulic levels).
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to strict OSHA safety protocols, which include wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and keeping the work area
Qualifications & Skills
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and fabrication layouts.
- Mathematical Proficiency: Strong shop math skills, particularly in geometry and calculating bend allowances for steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Experience with hand and power tools, and the ability to troubleshoot minor machine malfunctions.
- Physical Stamina: The role is physically demanding and typically requires standing for long periods and frequently lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Education: A high school diploma, GED, or a vocational certificate in metalworking is usually required.
