Job Description

North Country Pharmacy is an independent, community-focused pharmacy serving Sussex County with personalized, patient-centered care. We are seeking a highly motivated, friendly, and customer-oriented NJ-licensed Pharmacist who is passionate about making a meaningful impact in their community.

In this role, you will be more than the person behind the counter. You will serve as a trusted healthcare professional, providing expert medication guidance, educating patients, collaborating with providers, and helping ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a close-knit, independent pharmacy setting with the opportunity to build long-term relationships and grow with the business.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Patient Care

  • Review, interpret, and verify prescriptions for accuracy, appropriateness, and legality.
  • Counsel patients on prescription and over-the-counter medications, including proper use, side effects, interactions, and storage.
  • Assess patient needs and symptoms, providing guidance on minor ailments and determining when referral to a physician or other provider is appropriate.
  • Provide professional advice on OTC products, cosmetics, and parapharmaceuticals to support overall patient health and wellness.
  • Administer immunizations and other clinical services (e.g., injections, point-of-care testing, blood pressure and temperature checks) in accordance with state regulations and pharmacy protocols.

Dispensing & Operations

  • Accurately prepare, dispense, and label medications, ensuring correct dosages, formulations, and packaging for individual patients.
  • Maintain full control over stocking, storing, and monitoring medications and related products, including checking for proper conditions, expirations, and recalls.
  • Organize the pharmacy work area for efficiency, safety, and accuracy in dispensing and inventory management.
  • Maintain complete and accurate documentation, including patient profiles, controlled substance records, and other required logs.

Regulatory Compliance & Quality

  • Comply with all federal, state, and local pharmacy laws and regulations, as well as internal policies and procedures.
  • Support and uphold policies related to controlled substances, recordkeeping, privacy (HIPAA), and safety.
  • Participate in quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and service standards.

Collaboration & Professional Development

  • Communicate effectively with prescribers and other healthcare professionals to clarify orders, recommend therapy modifications, and resolve medication-related issues.
  • Stay current with advancements in pharmacy practice, new medications, and clinical guidelines through continuing education, professional development, and collaboration with peers.
  • Provide guidance and support to pharmacy technicians and support staff, fostering a culture of teamwork, accuracy, and customer service.

Required Qualifications

  • Current New Jersey Pharmacist License in good standing (required).
  • Retail/community pharmacy experience (required).
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from an accredited institution.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmacology, dosage calculations, drug interactions, and medication safety principles.
  • Ability to accurately interpret prescriptions, patient histories, and clinical information.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a customer-focused approach.
  • Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, empathy, and compassion in patient care.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Pharmacy residency or 1+ year of post-graduate clinical experience (preferred but not required).
  • Experience in an independent or high-volume retail pharmacy setting.
  • Familiarity with pharmacy management systems; knowledge of PrimeRx (Micro Merchant) is a plus, but not required.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications and pharmacy information systems.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills are a plus, especially for serving a diverse patient population.
