Position Overview:

To excel in this role, candidates must possess specialty expertise, including current certification in dermatology from the American Board of Dermatology, valid medical licensure, and appropriate medical staff appointments. Ongoing clinical engagement is also required.

The program director serves as a role model for both faculty and residents, engaging in clinical activities that align with the specialty. This involvement allows the director to exemplify the Core Competencies for faculty and residents alike.

Ongoing academic contributions in dermatology, such as publications, educational program development, or research, are essential, along with a minimum of three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience, or qualifications deemed acceptable by the Review Committee.

Responsibilities of the Program Director:

  • The program director holds responsibility, authority, and accountability for:

    • Administration and operations
    • Teaching and scholarly activities
    • Recruitment, evaluation, and promotion of residents, including disciplinary actions
    • Supervision of residents and their education in patient care contexts
  • Act as a model of professionalism.

  • As the program leader, the director must exemplify the qualities of compassion, integrity, and respect, serving as a role model for residents. It is crucial that the director demonstrates exceptional professionalism, high-quality patient care, educational excellence, and a scholarly approach to their work. The director fosters an environment that encourages respectful dialogue aimed at enhancing the educational experience.

  • Design and implement the program in alignment with community needs and the missions of both the Sponsoring Institution and the program.

  • Recognize that the mission of institutions involved in graduate medical education is to enhance public health. Each community has unique health needs influenced by location and demographics. Programs must understand the social determinants of health affecting the populations they serve and integrate these factors into the curriculum to address health disparities.

  • Maintain a conducive learning environment that supports residents in mastering the ACGME Competency domains.

  • Establish a leadership team to aid in achieving program objectives. Given the complexity of residency programs, the director can delegate authority while remaining accountable. This team may consist of both physician and non-physician personnel with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.

  • Develop and oversee a process for evaluating candidates for program faculty positions, ensuring annual reviews thereafter.

  • Have the authority to approve or remove faculty members from participation in residency education across all sites, as well as to remove residents from interactions or learning environments that do not meet program standards.

  • Ensure that all educators effectively model the Core Competencies. The privilege of working with residents is earned through effective teaching and professional conduct, and this privilege may be revoked if standards are not upheld.

  • Control who teaches residents, including faculty not involved in the educational program.

  • Submit accurate and complete information as required by the DIO, GMEC, and ACGME.

  • Provide candidates offered interviews with relevant information regarding eligibility for specialty board examinations.

  • Create a learning and working environment where residents can confidentially express concerns and provide feedback without fear of intimidation or retaliation, ensuring compliance with the Sponsoring Institution's grievance and due process policies.

  • Ensure adherence to the Sponsoring Institution's policies and procedures regarding due process in cases of resident suspension, dismissal, non-promotion, or non-renewal of appointments.

  • Recognize that the program operates under the auspices of its Sponsoring Institution, and the director must ensure compliance with its policies and procedures among faculty, support staff, and residents.

  • Ensure compliance with the Sponsoring Institution's employment and non-discrimination policies.

  • Residents should not be required to sign non-competition agreements or restrictive covenants.
