ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The College of Medicine in Knoxville was established in 1956 as the UT Memorial Research Center and Hospital, which also provided graduate medical and dental education and research programs. These programs evolved into the UT Graduate School of Medicine with the formation of the University of Tennessee Medical Center in 1991, and were recently rebranded to emphasize undergraduate medical education in Knoxville and the statewide presence of the Health Science Center.

The mission of the Knoxville Campus is to enhance medical education to train the next generation of physicians and dentists, deliver compassionate and comprehensive care in partnership with our hospital, and conduct innovative research that benefits patients and their families. Our college trains third- and fourth-year medical students, second-year Physician Assistant students, and offers Graduate Medical Education across 11 primary residency programs and 17 subspecialty fellowships. The Knoxville campus comprises 548 faculty members (258 paid), 245 residents and fellows, and accommodates an average of 40-50 medical students monthly. Additionally, we provide Continuing Medical Education services for faculty, residents, and practicing physicians in the region, along with Advanced Medical Simulation for students, residents, and faculty.

In collaboration with our hospital partner, the College of Medicine-Knoxville sponsors extensive translational research in both clinical and laboratory environments. Faculty members engage in partnerships with various institutions regionally and nationally, including other campuses of the Health Science Center, the University of Tennessee, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and other health science institutions.
