Location: Hagerstown, MD

Clinical Responsibilities

This position emphasizes high-quality, protocol-driven care within a specialized Observation Unit:

Observation Unit Services
  • Conduct thorough evaluations, management, and discharge planning for adult observation patients.

  • Adhere to evidence-based protocols for prevalent conditions such as chest pain, syncope, heart failure exacerbations, COPD/asthma, cellulitis, and dehydration.

  • Perform patient histories and physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and coordinate comprehensive care.

  • Collaborate closely with Emergency Medicine, specialists, and case management to ensure safe and timely patient discharges.

Patient Demographics

Focus on adult patients requiring short-term observation (generally less than 48 hours), encompassing a wide range of conditions typically seen in Family Medicine:

  • Acute exacerbations of chronic illnesses (CHF, COPD, diabetes).

  • Evaluation of chest pain and syncope.

  • Management of infectious conditions (cellulitis, urinary tract infections, pneumonia).

  • Addressing minor abdominal pain, headaches, and other non-specific complaints.

  • Post-procedure care and transitional needs.

Clinical Volume Expectations
  • High-throughput observation unit with a focused patient census.

  • Streamlined workflow prioritizing timely evaluations and patient dispositions.

  • Balanced daily workload supported by a strong team of staff.

Academic & Faculty Opportunities
  • Engage in teaching medical students and residents at the upcoming medical school.

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, protocol development, and scholarly activities.

Work Schedule & Call Requirements
  • Full-time position with a hospital-based schedule focused on Observation Unit shifts.

  • Consistent hours with an emphasis on daytime coverage.

  • Shared coverage responsibilities within the Hospital Medicine and Observation teams.

Clinical Support Structure
  • Access to dedicated nursing and support staff within the Observation Unit.

  • Close collaboration with the Emergency Department, Hospitalists, and specialists.

  • Multidisciplinary team approach aimed at optimizing patient flow and minimizing unnecessary hospitalizations.
