Overview

The role of Physician (Sleep Medicine) is situated at our medical center in Honolulu, HI.

Position Details: This opportunity is within the Directorate of Medicine's Sleep Laboratory at our facility in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Oahu, often referred to as "The Gathering Place," is the most populous island in Hawaii. Honolulu serves as both the largest city and the state capital, as well as the primary deep-water marine port for Hawaii. While the entire island falls under Honolulu County, the name "Honolulu" specifically refers to a section on the southeastern part of the island. Notable attractions on Oahu include Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Kane’ohe Bay, Kailua Bay, the North Shore, and the resort area of Ko’Olina.

Oahu is famous for experiencing the longest recorded rain shower, lasting 200 consecutive days. Kane’ohe Ranch documented 247 days of continuous rain from August 27, 1993, to April 30, 1994. The island enjoys an average temperature ranging from 70–85 °F (21–29 °C), with the warmest months being June through October. Winters are milder, with temperatures averaging between 68–78 °F (20–26 °C).

Responsibilities

Key Duties:

  • Act as the leading expert in all aspects of sleep medicine.

  • Incorporate the latest scientific findings on sleep, interpret established professional guidelines, and provide education to fellow healthcare providers.

  • Formulate policies and guidelines for sleep evaluation programs.

  • Exercise discretion in interpreting guidelines to enhance the program and patient care.

  • Conduct examinations, diagnoses, and treatments for a diverse range of outpatients in the clinic.

  • Identify various chronic conditions and a spectrum of sleep and respiratory disorders, including complex diagnoses and treatments.

  • Oversee cases that often involve intricate conditions requiring advanced diagnostic and testing procedures.

  • Order and assess a comprehensive array of tests, including polysomnography, actigraphy, sleep diaries, unattended sleep studies, relevant radiographic tests, pulmonary function tests, and laboratory tests as necessary.

  • Provide supervision, education, and consultation to other healthcare professionals, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical students, interns, residents, and fellows.

  • Engage directly with staff members to coordinate sleep medicine services and address operational challenges.

  • Offer expert guidance not only to program providers but also to senior leadership regarding sleep health issues and their implications for broader healthcare concerns.

  • Serve as the primary Sleep Medicine Physician; Board Certification or a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sleep Medicine is preferred.

OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED AS NEEDED.

Qualifications

Eligibility: Open to U.S. Citizens
To qualify, candidates must fulfill the educational and experiential criteria outlined below. Experience encompasses both paid and unpaid roles, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, social). All relevant experience will be credited, including volunteer work. Your resume should clearly detail your pertinent experience; if qualifying through education, transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Basic Requirements for Physician (Sleep Medicine):
Degree: A Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from an accredited institution in the U.S. or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by recognized bodies such as the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. A foreign medical degree must demonstrate equivalency to accredited U.S. programs, evidenced by permanent certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. (Note: Attach transcripts or proof of foreign equivalency with your application.)
Licensure: Candidates must hold a current, unrestricted license as a Physician from a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
Graduate Training: Following the attainment of a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, candidates must have at least one year of supervised clinical experience, such as a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an accredited institution.

Residency, Experience, and Training: Applicants must have completed an accredited residency in the relevant specialty (Sleep Medicine) and possess equivalent experience and training totaling at least 4 years. Experience cannot substitute for the required residency training for this specialty.

If selected for the Physician role: A salary estimate will not be provided at the initial job offer stage. The salary determination process will commence after the job offer is accepted, involving the Activity Compensation Panel to establish base and market pay for your starting salary, which will be communicated once approved. Physician salaries are based on a tier scale influenced by specialty, grade, and location.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If utilizing education from foreign institutions to meet qualification standards, you must provide evidence that your credentials have been evaluated by a recognized organization specializing in foreign education assessment, confirming that your education is equivalent to that obtained in an accredited U.S. program.
