Location: Sussex Campus Hospital

Status: Full-Time, 80 Hours

General Overview:

The Hematologist-Oncologist plays a crucial role in delivering care and medical supervision for patients dealing with malignant diseases and hematologic disorders. This position requires strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with other medical professionals, ensuring high-quality services are provided and representing our Oncology Service Line to both medical staff and the community. The Hematologist-Oncologist will deliver oncology services in accordance with established guidelines and within appropriate timeframes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver oncology services based on evidence-based guidelines promptly, ensuring all documentation aligns with organizational policies.

  • Engage with newly diagnosed cancer patients or those with benign hematology conditions to discuss treatment options. Provide education to patients and their families about the disease, diagnostic procedures, tests, and treatment goals. Set realistic objectives and potential outcomes for patients, while communicating the treatment plan with team members (including Nurse Practitioners, RN Chemotherapy, and RN Navigators) and overseeing its implementation.

  • Work alongside a multidisciplinary team (including surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology) to develop a comprehensive care plan for patients. Advocate for best practices and guidelines-driven care during multidisciplinary conferences, and communicate the care plan to relevant team members (e.g., Primary Care providers).

  • Gather and analyze pertinent patient healthcare data to assess needs, adhering to organizational policies for documentation, diagnosis coding, and accurate charge capture.

  • Participate in the Clinical Research Program by suggesting potential clinical studies for enrollment on-site or referring to appropriate tertiary facilities.

  • Maintain communication with Oncology Administration regarding established workflows to enhance departmental performance. Actively contribute to the development of the Oncology Service Line strategic plan and promote its vision and goals within the community.

  • Perform any additional duties as assigned within the scope of the role.

Required Education, Credentials, and Experience:

  • Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD) with completion of a recognized internal medicine residency and a hematology-oncology fellowship.

  • Credentials: MD or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) licensure, along with a Controlled Substance Registration and eligibility for active membership in our medical staff.

  • Experience:

Required: No prior experience is necessary; candidates must be board eligible in hematology and oncology.

Preferred: Board certification in hematology and oncology is desirable.
