This role is situated at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California.

Position Title: Physician (Dermatology)

A recruitment or relocation incentive MAY BE available for candidates who are new to Federal service.

Advanced In Hire (AIH) MAY BE granted for exceptionally qualified individuals.

Salary Range: $123,077 to $336,000 annually

San Diego is located along the picturesque San Diego Bay. To the northeast, Balboa Park features various mesas and canyons, surrounded by vibrant urban neighborhoods such as Hillcrest and North Park. East and southeast of the city are City Heights, the College Area, and Southeast San Diego. Mission Valley and Interstate 8 lie to the north, with communities like Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Tierrasanta, and Navajo situated to the north of the valley and south of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. The northern suburbs, including Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, and Rancho Bernardo, extend northward from Miramar. The far northeast section of the city includes Lake Hodges and the San Pasqual Valley, known for its agricultural preserve. The northwest corner features Carmel Valley and Del Mar Heights, with Torrey Pines State Reserve and the Golden Triangle business center located just south. Further south, the coastal areas of La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach are found. Point Loma is positioned on the peninsula across the bay from downtown. The communities of South San Diego, such as San Ysidro and Otay Mesa, are adjacent to the Mexico-United States border and are separated from the rest of the city by National City and Chula Vista. A narrow strip of land at the southern end of San Diego Bay connects these neighborhoods to the city.

San Diego boasts one of the top ten climates in the United States, recognized for having one of the best summer climates according to The Weather Channel. The area is classified as having either a semi-arid or Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm, dry summers and mild winters, with the majority of rainfall occurring between December and March. The city enjoys a temperate climate year-round, averaging 201 days above 70°F and experiencing low annual rainfall (9–13 inches).

Responsibilities

Duties:

  • Conduct thorough dermatologic evaluations, diagnoses, and treatments for active-duty personnel, retirees, and their dependents in a busy outpatient clinic.

  • Assess and manage acute dermatologic emergencies, including severe drug reactions, blistering disorders, vasculitis, and complex infections.

  • Supervise resident clinical interactions, procedures, and inpatient consultations.

  • Perform dermatologic procedures such as biopsies (shave, punch, excisional), cryotherapy, electrodessication and curettage, intralesional injections, phototherapy oversight, and minor surgical excisions.

  • Offer dermatology consultation services to inpatient units, emergency departments, and operational units.

Qualifications

Eligibility: US Citizens

To qualify, candidates must fulfill the educational and experiential criteria outlined below. Experience encompasses both paid and unpaid roles, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, will be credited. Your resume should clearly outline your relevant experience; if qualifying through education, transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Physician (Dermatology):

Degree: A Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by recognized bodies such as the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, or the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association. A foreign medical degree must demonstrate equivalency to accredited U.S. schools, evidenced by permanent certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the U.S. and graduate education abroad, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

Licensure: Candidates must hold a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.

Graduate Training: Following the attainment of a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, candidates must have completed at least one year of supervised clinical experience, such as a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an accredited hospital or institution.

In addition to the basic requirements, to qualify for this position, candidates must also meet the following:

Residency Training: Applicants must have successfully completed accredited residency training in Dermatology, along with equivalent experience and training totaling at least four years. Experience cannot substitute for the required residency training specific to this specialty.

If selected for the Physician position: A salary quote will not be provided at the time of the initial job offer. The salary determination process will commence after the initial job offer is accepted, involving the Activity Compensation Panel, which will assess base pay and market pay to establish your starting salary, which will be communicated once approved. Physician salaries are based on a tier scale determined by specialty, grade, and location.
