Opportunity Overview

The Chief of Family and Internal Medicine is responsible for providing both clinical and operational guidance within the department, ensuring high standards in patient care, operational effectiveness, and financial health. This position reports to the Chair of Primary Care and collaborates closely with the administrative leadership to promote safe, efficient, and patient-focused care while aligning departmental performance with the broader organizational objectives.

This role works alongside administrative leaders to manage practice operations, enhance performance, and cultivate a culture of teamwork, innovation, and ongoing improvement.

Primary Responsibilities

Strategic & Operational Leadership

  • Guide the department to align with the organization's strategic goals and priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Administrative Director to manage staffing, budgeting, and resource distribution.
  • Design and execute initiatives aimed at enhancing patient access, provider involvement, and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure adequate clinician staffing to meet both current and anticipated needs.
  • Engage in regular onsite visits to maintain visibility, support frontline teams, and identify operational enhancements.

Clinical Excellence

  • Ensure compliance with evidence-based practices and quality benchmarks.
  • Advocate for patient safety and lead continuous quality improvement efforts.
  • Act as a clinical resource and mentor for healthcare providers.

Recruitment, Onboarding & Workforce Development

  • Direct the recruitment strategy for physicians and providers in Family and Internal Medicine in collaboration with Physician Recruitment, HR, and operational leaders.
  • Engage in candidate assessment, interviewing, selection, and offer processes to ensure a strong clinical and cultural fit.
  • Oversee the onboarding and integration of new providers, ensuring a smooth, supportive, and high-performing transition into practice.
  • Work with Medical Directors to create standardized onboarding, mentoring, and early-career support systems.
  • Facilitate succession planning and leadership development within the department.
  • Provide timely and constructive performance feedback through annual evaluations to promote accountability, team growth, clinical excellence, and high-quality patient care.
  • Encourage provider retention through engagement, performance feedback, and career development opportunities.

Performance Management

  • Track and achieve key performance indicators (KPIs) related to quality, patient satisfaction, and financial viability.
  • Enhance productivity and streamline workflows to meet RVU and access objectives.
  • Collaborate with administrative and revenue cycle leaders to improve documentation, coding, and cost management.
  • Address performance deficiencies through data-driven improvement strategies and coaching.

Growth & Innovation

  • Support the integration of technology and population health initiatives.
  • Encourage a culture of innovation and adaptability.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Maintain strong relationships with specialty departments and organizational leadership.
  • Clearly and consistently communicate goals, expectations, and performance updates.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO with board certification in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
  • A minimum of 5 years of clinical experience and at least 3 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Proven success in managing clinical operations and achieving performance metrics.
  • Experience in physician recruitment, onboarding, and team development is highly desirable.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
