Our Organization operates the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, a teaching hospital that delivers a comprehensive range of services, equipped with cutting-edge technology, education, and research facilities. The medical center is situated on a 119-acre campus with 350 acute care beds and provides healthcare services across 12 locations in southeast Texas.

Key Responsibilities Include:
- Conducting clinical assessments, including patient history, physical examinations, and appropriate diagnostic evaluations, followed by timely treatment implementation.
- Diagnosing and managing hematologic and oncologic emergencies.
- Participating in rounds with residents and fellows on the inpatient service, rotating with other physician team members.
- Providing coverage on weekends and holidays in rotation with fellow physicians.
- Demonstrating competence in the following procedures:
- Diagnosing and managing malignant hematology, benign hematology, and solid tumor oncologic diseases.
- Identifying and managing side effects related to cancer treatments and hematologic conditions.
- Advising and counseling patients with new diagnoses of malignancies or benign hematologic conditions.
- Teaching clinical fellows and residents in an outpatient clinic environment.
- Performing bone marrow biopsies and analyzing peripheral smears as necessary.
- Ordering diagnostic studies and interpreting laboratory tests, EKGs, and radiological tests (e.g., chest x-ray, CT scan, MRI, PET scan).
- Providing initial and follow-up outpatient care for patients with hematologic and oncologic conditions.
- Prescribing chemotherapy and other medications within the defined scope of practice.
- Counseling patients on cancer screening, genetic testing, and prevention strategies.
- Responding promptly to consultation requests.
- Offering education and counseling to patients and their families regarding hematologic or oncologic issues.
- Supervising advanced practice practitioners (nurse practitioners, physician assistants) and mentoring students, residents, and fellows in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Maintaining communication with referring providers and other specialties (surgery, radiation oncology, transplant, etc.) for patients requiring multidisciplinary care.
- Participating in multidisciplinary tumor boards.
- Completing electronic consultations (e-consults) for hematologic and oncologic conditions.
