Job Description
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine within our organization is on the lookout for a full-time Director of Transfusion Medicine. This role encompasses oversight of the blood bank, immunohematology testing, stem cell collection laboratory operations, and the apheresis unit. We encourage candidates with a strong background and interest in additional laboratory medicine areas, such as HLA/histocompatibility, hematology/hematopathology, special coagulation, or molecular pathology, to apply.
Your Impact on Patient Care:
You will provide medical leadership and supervision for the transfusion medicine services, which include the Blood Bank, apheresis unit, and stem cell processing laboratory.
Your role will involve leading a team to enhance blood product utilization, uphold appropriate transfusion practices, and ensure compliance with local, state, federal, and accrediting agency standards.
You will cover inpatient and outpatient transfusion and apheresis services, offering medical consultations on transfusion-related matters for patient care.
Your responsibilities will include the collection, cryopreservation, and distribution of hematopoietic stem cell products.
Depending on your interests and qualifications, you may also provide coverage for HLA, special coagulation, hematology/hematopathology, or other clinical laboratory areas.
There will be numerous opportunities and support for engaging in clinical, translational, and basic science research.
You will be eligible for an academic appointment at a rank aligned with your experience at the affiliated university.
Who You Are:
You hold an MD/DO degree.
You are Board Certified in Clinical Pathology, Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, or Internal Medicine, with additional Board Certification or eligibility in Transfusion Medicine.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of experience in transfusion medicine and familiarity with blood banking and cellular therapy regulatory standards (e.g., AABB/CAP, FDA, FACT).
You are dedicated to teaching and providing clinical service.
You are licensed or eligible to practice medicine in Massachusetts.
You qualify for a faculty appointment at the affiliated university and are willing to participate in teaching residents and medical students.
A background in clinical research activities and/or funded or transferable research is advantageous.

The Transfusion Medicine service supports extensive organ transplant programs (cardiac, kidney, and liver), hematopoietic progenitor cell transplants, a level 1 trauma center, and a wide range of surgical, oncologic, and high-risk obstetrical patients. The Anatomic Pathology service processes around 20,000 specimens each year, including various biopsies and large surgical samples.
The salary for this position ranges from $279,877 to $310,250 per year. Actual compensation will be determined during the selection process and will consider various factors, including relevant experience, education, internal equity, and academic rank.
